'Pop is brutal because everyone wants to declare something over so quickly. But careers are long if you keep showing up.
'I had to learn that a quiet season doesn’t mean failure. It can be a rebuilding season, a learning season, a becoming season.'
While some recognise the star for her viral hit Midnight Sun, others will remember her from the summer of 2016.
It was the year that her song Lush Life and Never Forget You propelled her into stardom after the track dominated charts.
Yet, despite its success, Zara suffered a blow to her career and was subjected to criticism over her feuds with and , as well as controversy surrounding her comments about abortion.
She is barely fazed by her so-called 'flop era' and instead uses it as a source of resilience rather than shame.
'I've already had success and then my flop era. And then it's like, "Okay, I flopped". So, it doesn't scare me anymore', she says.
She added to ABC News: 'I think, looking back, I just felt like I didn’t know what I wanted to do. The project didn’t start from here (gestures to inside). I just kept looking outside of myself. Like, "what do people want me to do, what do they like?"
'It’s the fact that you are being totally ignored, but you have to push through and be excited – while not being seen. It can be discouraging.
'But, my love for singing and music goes so deep into the fabric of my DNA and who I am.'

Zara's ethos as an artist is the hope to have longevity and to leave a mark on pop history.
But with her outspoken and outlandish demeanor and passion for discussing politics, hot topics and other celebrities, Zara is often at the forefront of controversy.
Earlier this year, Zara revealed she lost a massive $3million (£2.23million) brand deal after making a 'funny' joke about abortion on TikTok.
'I didn't know I was pregnant here but at least my baby got to hear "Midnight Sun" before I aborted it,' the fan wrote in the text overlay of the clip.
Replying to the fan, Zara responded: 'I killed the performance and then you killed it after the performance purrrrrr.'
While addressing the backlash, the Lush Life singer revealed she lost a huge brand deal from the joke but insisted that it was 'funny' and she wouldn't want to partner with that brand it they 'didn't agree with me'.
Speaking in a candid new video, Zara said: 'I mean just lately, the abortion joke, which is very funny by the way, I lost a $3million deal which is like what the f***.'
She continued: 'If you don't agree with me thinking women should have access to abortion or that we can have a joking conversation about it then we are not meant to be partners.
'I don't give a f*** about it. You can send me a million DMs and send me a million comments about me being a bad person or a wicked witch, but I don't give a rats a*** because I'm so sure in my stance in that.'
It comes after Zara slammed Immigration and Customs Enforcement as she declared her love for immigrants, trans people, socialism and even criminals in a furious social media rant.
The pop singer has long been a champion of Left-wing causes and posted several furious rants to her Instagram story in reaction to the ICE-involved shooting of Minnesota woman Renee Nicole Good.
'Idk about yall but I'd rather have someone smoking crack on my couch than a f**king ICE agent ewwwwwwwww. They're criminals too. Killing, kidnapping, violent, hateful ones,' she wrote.
While some recognise the star for her viral hit Midnight Sun, others will remember her from the summer of 2016
In another, she stated that she 'loves' everyone from 'immigrants, criminals, trans people, abortions, queers, slutty women, contraception, welfare and socialism.'
However, she bluntly declared: 'I f**king hate ICE.'
She explained her support of criminals as part of her desire to see her boyfriend, Swedish dancer Lamin Holmén, in a separate post, writing: 'aahhhh criminals?!?!?!? Girl YES, heavy on that s***.'
'The reason why my sweet, loving, kind, caring, compassionate, smart, generous, talented, thoughtful man can't come to the US - AT ALL - to visit me ever since we got together almost six years ago is because he has a criminal record. Guess for what! Weed!'
'We spend months and months apart because of a little spliff over six years ago.'
The singer-songwriter also suggested that 'the billionaire leaders are f**king drooling at the sight of society being this divided.'
'We can change people. I believe that. I have to believe that. F**k ICE,' she concluded.
