While speaking on the red carpet, she told Film Independent, 'You should always have an independent spirit.
'Take inspiration from influences around you, family, friends, or people that inspire you, but it's about you and your point of view. You've got to always champion that above all else.'
During the show, she was active on social media, resharing content from her seatmates Lawrence Lamont and Issa Rae.
Lamont, who directed her film, shared a selfie and wrote, 'Look who's sitting next to me at the @FilmIndependent Awards. Wish us luck! @keke.'
And Rae, who is one of the movie's producers, panned the table in a short clip and wrote, 'ONE OF THEM DAYS Squad.'
