Lakeith Stanfield

Lakeith Lee Stanfield, born August 12, 1991, in Victorville, California, and raised in Victorville, San Bernardino County, is one of the most singular and unpredictable actors working in American cinema and television today, a performer of extraordinary natural gift and emotional spontaneity whose uncanny ability to occupy liminal, unusual, and psychologically complex spaces onscreen — characters who are simultaneously inside and outside the social world they inhabit, watching it with an observer's acuity while being consumed by it — has produced a body of work in his late twenties and early thirties that already marks him as one of the defining actors of his generation. Growing up in Victorville in a large African American family in difficult circumstances — he was raised primarily by a single mother and has spoken about periods of homelessness in his childhood — he discovered acting through his school drama program and pursued it with the urgency of someone who had found a path out of genuine hardship. He attended the Los Angeles High School for the Arts and then began auditioning professionally while still in his teens. His breakthrough came with his debut film role in Short Term 12 (2013), Destin Daniel Cretton's acclaimed low-budget drama about group home workers, in which his brief, devastating performance as a teenage resident named Marques already showed a naturalistic authenticity that prompted widespread notice.
