Biography

Life & Career

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, born June 17, 1987, in Compton, California, is the most critically acclaimed rapper of his era and widely regarded as one of the greatest lyricists in hip-hop history, an artist whose albums represent some of the most ambitious, structurally complex, and morally serious works in American popular music. Raised in Compton, a city whose history of gang violence, poverty, and systematic inequality became the essential subject matter of his art, Lamar grew up immersed in West Coast rap, watching Tupac Shakur film the California Love video in his neighborhood as a child — an experience he has described as formative. He began writing raps at age thirteen and released his first mixtape under the name K-Dot before being discovered by Top Dawg Entertainment. His major label debut section.80 (2011) announced an extraordinary lyrical intelligence. Good Kid, m.A.A.d City (2012) was a viscerally cinematic concept album telling the story of a single day in Compton as a coming-of-age tragedy, earning comparisons to films by John Singleton and the Grammy for Best Rap Album. To Pimp a Butterfly (2015), a staggeringly ambitious fusion of jazz, funk, spoken word poetry, and hip-hop addressing systemic racism, institutional oppression, and personal depression, earned universal critical acclaim. DAMN. (2017) won the Pulitzer Prize for Music — making Lamar the first rapper in history to win the prize — and won five Grammy Awards. Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers (2022) examined therapy and accountability with characteristic complexity. His 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show performance was a cultural event of extraordinary power, celebrated for its fearless political directness and musical ambition.
