Biography
Life & Career
Javier Ángel Encinas Bardem, born March 1, 1969, in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain, to a legendary acting dynasty — his mother Pilar Bardem is a celebrated Spanish actress, his uncle Fernando Rey was one of Luis Buñuel's great collaborators, and his grandmother and great-uncle were also performers — is an Academy Award-winning Spanish actor of extraordinary intensity, range, and physical presence who has become one of the most recognizable and respected European actors in American cinema, a performer whose ability to occupy moral extremes with equal conviction has produced one of the most distinctive bodies of work in contemporary film. He began acting in Spanish cinema and television as a teenager, becoming one of the most admired young actors in Spain through work with directors including Bigas Luna, Pedro Almodóvar, and Alejandro Amenábar. His international breakthrough came with his Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for Before Night Falls (2000), Julian Schnabel's biographical film about the Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas, in which Bardem played the gay, HIV-positive writer with devastating emotional openness and physical courage. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the philosophical killer Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men (2007), the Coen Brothers' adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's nihilistic Western — a performance of such iconic, cold-blooded menace that Chigurh immediately entered the pantheon of the greatest cinematic villains in history. He received another Oscar nomination for Best Actor for Biutiful (2010), Alejandro González Iñárritu's devastating portrait of a man facing his own mortality in Barcelona. Additional acclaimed work includes The Sea Inside (2004, Goya Award), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), Skyfall (2012) as the Bond villain Silva, The Counselor (2013), and Being the Ricardos (2021) playing Desi Arnaz opposite Nicole Kidman's Lucille Ball.
