Denzel Washington

Denzel Hayes Washington Jr., born December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York, is one of the most powerful and revered actors in the history of American cinema, a performer of extraordinary intensity, physical command, and moral complexity who has sustained his dominance across five full decades. The son of a Pentecostal minister and a beauty salon owner, Washington was channeled into the Oakland Military Academy following a turbulent adolescence, where structure proved formative. He enrolled at Fordham University as a pre-med student before discovering theater and transferring to the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. His breakout came in the acclaimed medical drama St. Elsewhere (1982-1988) as Dr. Philip Chandler. His Academy Award career began with Cry Freedom (1987), then reached its first pinnacle with Glory (1989), Edward Zwick's Civil War film in which his portrayal of the formerly enslaved Private Trip — a man fighting for dignity within a Black Union regiment — earned him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in a performance of volcanic suppressed pain. He became the pre-eminent Black male star of the 1990s through commanding work in Mo' Better Blues, Malcolm X (1992, a towering Spike Lee biographical film), The Pelican Brief, Philadelphia, Crimson Tide, and He Got Game. His second Academy Award, for Best Actor in Training Day (2001), for which he played corrupt LAPD detective Alonzo Harris with terrifying conviction, making him only the second Black actor to win Best Actor at the time. He directed and starred in Antwone Fisher (2002), and directed and starred in Fences (2016), adapted from the August Wilson play in which he had triumphed on Broadway opposite Viola Davis in 2010. His Tony Award win for that Broadway production confirmed his status as a complete dramatic artist across every medium.
