Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy, born May 25, 1976, in Douglas, Cork, Ireland, and raised in Ballintemple, Cork, is an Irish actor of extraordinary concentration, physical minimalism, and psychological depth, a performer whose ability to inhabit moral ambiguity, trauma, and internal conflict with a quality of stillness and inward focus that reaches the audience without apparent effort has made him one of the most admired and distinctive screen presences in contemporary world cinema. The son of a schoolteacher father and a French teacher mother, he grew up in a household that valued education and the arts equally, attending Presentation Brothers College in Cork and subsequently studying law at University College Cork before abandoning his studies to pursue acting, a decision that horrified his parents initially but which his extraordinary talent quickly vindicated. He built his theatrical career in Cork and then Dublin before his film breakthrough in Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later (2002), a post-apocalyptic horror film in which his physical vulnerability and the directness of his blue-eyed gaze gave the film its human center.
