Chris Rock

Christopher Julius Rock III, born February 7, 1965, in Andrews, South Carolina, and raised in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, is widely regarded as one of the greatest stand-up comedians of all time, a performer of extraordinary verbal precision, sociological insight, and controlled comic fury whose work from the late 1980s through the present has consistently pushed the boundaries of what comedy is permitted to examine and how honestly it may do so. Growing up in Bed-Stuy, one of Brooklyn's most economically challenged neighborhoods, and attending the predominantly white James Madison High School in Sheepshead Bay after his parents chose to bus him across Brooklyn for educational opportunity — an experience of daily cross-cultural friction that provided the raw material for decades of material about race in America — he dropped out of high school to pursue comedy full-time after being discovered by Eddie Murphy performing at a small club at age eighteen. He worked as a busboy and developed his craft on the New York stand-up circuit before landing a role in Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) and being cast as a featured player on Saturday Night Live (1990-1993). His stand-up specials Big Ass Jokes (1994), Bring the Pain (1996), Bigger and Blacker (1999), Never Scared (2004), Kill the Messenger (2008), Tamborine (2018), and Selective Outrage (2023) represent one of the most consistently brilliant catalogues in the history of stand-up comedy. His film career includes New Jack City (1991), Boomerang (1992), Head of State (2003, which he also wrote and directed), The Longest Yard (2005), Madagascar franchise voice roles, Grown Ups (2010), What to Expect When You're Expecting (2012), Top Five (2014, which he also wrote and directed), and Spirited (2022).
