Chadwick Boseman

Chadwick Aaron Boseman, born November 29, 1976, in Anderson, South Carolina, and raised in a closely knit African American community defined by faith, family, and communal ambition, was an actor of profound dignity, physical grace, and spiritual depth whose career — cut tragically short by his death from colon cancer on August 28, 2020, at forty-three — produced a body of work recognized as among the most historically significant in American cinema. He attended Howard University in Washington D.C., studying directing in the College of Fine Arts, and subsequently trained at the British American Drama Academy at Oxford, supported in part by a scholarship arranged by Phylicia Rashad. He worked in theater and television for years before his breakthrough in biographical films: he played Jackie Robinson in 42 (2013) with extraordinary athletic and emotional conviction, and gave an equally commanding performance as James Brown in Get on Up (2014), a portrayal requiring months of mastering Brown's singular dance style. He was privately diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer in 2016, a diagnosis he kept entirely secret from the public while continuing to work with the full force of his talent. He was cast as T'Challa / Black Panther in the MCU, debuting in Captain America: Civil War (2016) and headlining Black Panther (2018) — Ryan Coogler's landmark film that became a global cultural phenomenon earning over 1.3 billion dollars, the first superhero film nominated for Best Picture, and carrying unprecedented cultural meaning for Black audiences worldwide. He appeared in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). He received a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020), filmed during his cancer battle, delivering one of the most powerful and moving screen performances of the 21st century.
