Cate Blanchett

Catherine Elise Blanchett, born May 14, 1969, in Melbourne, Australia, is one of the most distinguished and versatile screen and stage performers in the world, an actress whose range encompasses the grandest classical theater, intimate psychological drama, and explosive Hollywood blockbusters with equal and seemingly effortless mastery. She briefly studied economics at Melbourne University before following her passion to the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, graduating in 1992. Her theater career launched immediately with extraordinary force, culminating in her leadership of the Sydney Theatre Company, which she co-directed with her husband, playwright Andrew Upton, from 2008 to 2013, overseeing an acclaimed period bringing the company global recognition and including her own celebrated performances in A Streetcar Named Desire and Hedda Gabler. Her film debut in Paradise Road (1997) led rapidly to the breakthrough role of Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth (1998), earning her first Oscar nomination and announcing her as a major international talent. She won her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress playing the eccentric, genius Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator (2004). She won her second Oscar, for Best Actress, for her devastating portrayal of a collapsing New York socialite in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine (2013). In between came the luminous Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the biographical I'm Not There (in which she played a Bob Dylan avatar), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the romantic masterpiece Carol (2015) opposite Rooney Mara, Thor: Ragnarok, and the extraordinary Tar (2022), in which her portrayal of a world-famous conductor brought down by her own hubris was called by many the greatest screen performance of the decade. A UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, she has advocated consistently for displaced people and environmental sustainability.
