Biography

Life & Career

Barry Keoghan, born October 18, 1992, and raised in Summerhill, one of the most disadvantaged inner-city neighborhoods in Dublin, Ireland, in circumstances of significant hardship — he was taken into foster care at age twelve following his mother's death from a heroin overdose and placed with various family members and foster homes throughout his adolescence — is one of the most compelling and fearless young actors to emerge anywhere in the world in the 2020s, a performer whose ability to inhabit the darkest, most socially marginalised, and psychologically extreme characters with an authenticity born of genuine personal experience has produced a series of performances of almost shocking intensity in only a handful of years. He left school at fifteen and began performing in small theater productions in Dublin before being discovered and cast in his first significant television role. His international breakthrough came with his Academy Award-nominated performance in The Banshees of Inisherin (2022), Martin McDonagh's extraordinary dark comedy-drama set on a remote Irish island, in which he played Dominic Kearney, the gentle, simple-minded son of the island's brutal policeman — a performance of devastating pathos and comedic truth that revealed him as a performer of the very first rank. His earlier acclaimed work included 71 (2014), Mammal (2016), The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017, Yorgos Lanthimos's disturbing thriller in which he played the revenge-seeking teenager Martin with an emotional blankness that was genuinely unsettling), American Animals (2018), Dunkirk (2017), Calm with Horses (2019), The Green Knight (2021), Eternals (2021) as Druig in the MCU, and Saltburn (2023), Emerald Fennell's psychosexual thriller in which his portrayal of the sociopathic Oliver Quick — an outsider who insinuates himself into an aristocratic English family — was a tour de force of manipulation, vulnerability, and dark comic menace that became one of the most talked-about film performances of the year.
