Biography
Life & Career
Ana Celia de Armas Caso, born April 30, 1988, in Santa Cruz del Norte, Cuba, and raised in Havana, is a Cuban-Spanish actress who began her career in Cuban and Spanish film and television before building one of the most impressive Hollywood careers of any foreign-born actress in the contemporary era, culminating in her Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for Blonde (2022) and her starring role as the CIA analyst Paloma in No Time to Die (2021). She showed early interest in performance through school productions in Santa Cruz del Norte and was accepted to the National Theatre School of Cuba in Havana at age twelve, training there for four years and making her feature debut in the Cuban film Una rosa de Francia (2006) before relocating to Madrid at eighteen to pursue a career in Spanish film and television. She spent seven years in Spain, appearing in the television series El Internado (2007-2010) and building a strong career in Spanish-language cinema before making her English-language debut in Knock Knock (2015), Eli Roth's thriller co-starring Keanu Reeves. Her Hollywood profile rose rapidly through War Dogs (2016), Hands of Stone (2016), Overdrive (2017), the critically acclaimed neo-noir Blade Runner 2049 (2017, playing the holographic AI Joi with otherworldly beauty and depth), Knives Out (2019, Rian Johnson's whodunit in which her portrayal of the guileless, good-hearted nurse Marta Cabrera became the film's moral center and won her a Critics' Choice nomination), The Informer (2019), No Time to Die (2021), Nightmare Alley (2021), Deep Water (2022), and Ghosted (2023). Her Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for Blonde (2022), Andrew Dominik's radical, deeply controversial impressionistic portrait of Marilyn Monroe in which she gave a performance of extraordinary physical and emotional vulnerability speaking in an accent and inhabiting a psyche and a legend, announced her as a dramatic actress of the highest order.
