However, the new instalment will differ significantly from director 's trilogy.
The sequel will feature a female-driven narrative centered around the character of Connie Corleone, the only daughter of Vito Corleone, famously played by Marlon Brando in the first movie.
It will be based on the upcoming novel Connie, written by best-selling Italian American author Adriana Trigiani and officially authorized by the estate of original Godfather author Mario Puzo.

However, a rep for Coppola says that it's 'unlikely' he will return to direct Connie despite helming the first three films.

Even if Coppola wanted to direct the sequel, it's doubtful that any studio would trust him with big budget IP like The Godfather after 2024's Megalopolis.
The sci-fi epic, which was a passion project for Coppola, was savaged by critics and lost around $100million after tanking at the box office.
There's also no word yet on whether Al Pacino, now 86, or Talia Shire, who portrayed Connie in the first three films, will be back.
The rest of the original Godfather cast have since passed away.
Diane Keaton, who played Kay, died last October at age 79 of bacterial pneumonia, followed by Robert Duvall, who played Tom, in February from old age. He was 95.
Fans have reacted negatively to news of a fourth film, with one commenting, 'Look, I love the original trilogy as much as anyone, but please... just let it sleep with the fishes.'
Another wrote, 'Well, knowing Hollywood, we’ll probably have a Chinese Vito Corleone.'
