has been mocked for her bizarre description of her chosen gown at Monday night's in New York.

The co-chair of the event, 58, was quizzed about the inspiration behind her look, which comprised a floor-sweeping red sequinned gown with feathered details.

The theme of the event is Costume Art, while the dress code is Fashion Is Art, meaning many replicated iconic paintings or statues, however fans alleged that Nicole had instead decided to dress as a 'red Tweety bird'.

Nicole's reference was more obscure, as she told Vogue: 'Fashion is art and I wanted red, because I wanted to embrace the way in which red has been used in art through the years. Vitality. Red is vitality. It's love. It's romance. So that's what we want, right?'

One fan of the star who was commenting on her words wrote: 'I love how, besides being a chameleonic actress and classy movie star, Kidman is also one of the most unintentionally funny celebrities out there.'

Nicole joined Beyonce and Venus Williams alongside Vogue's global editorial director Anna Wintour to oversee fashion's biggest night.

It was the first time tennis superstar Williams has co-chaired the gala. Nicole previously co-chaired the star-studded event in 2003 as well as 2005, and Beyonce was an honorary chair in 2013.

The museum is set to showcase historical and contemporary garments from the Costume Institute for the exhibition, which will be divided into three categories: the classical and the nude body, aging and pregnant bodies, and the anatomical body.

The exhibit - set to unveil the Met's sprawling new Condé Nast Nast Galleries - has been made possible by lead sponsors Bezos and Sanchez.

'The title "Costume Art" refers to the history of the Costume Institute,' Andrew Bolton, the collection's curator, said at a press conference. Bolton, who selects the theme, said fashion has 'the status of art because of, and not in spite of, its relation to the body.'

This year's gala was marred with controversy over Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, 62, and his wife Lauren Sanchez sponsoring the event. The couple reportedly gave $10 million to the Costume Institute in exchange for being named honorary co-chairs.

Nicole's reference was more obscure, as she told Vogue: 'Fashion is art and I wanted red, because I wanted to embrace the way in which red has been used in art through the years. Vitality. Red is vitality. It's love. It's romance. So that's what we want, right?'
