Britney Spears Faces Life-Altering Crisis Alone

'Nobody wants to go to Britney's funeral or visit her in jail because she has killed someone.'

That's the pained verdict of a source close to Britney Spears who - after her arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence - seems more on the brink than ever before.

'It is now life or death,' said a second insider.

The 44-year-old perpetually troubled pop star was stopped by police Wednesday night after an hour-long car chase in .

Spears was weaving in and out of lanes along Highway 101 in Ventura County, the Daily Mail has learned, and driving without a tail light.

Audio from a  described the chaotic pursuit, with dispatchers even heard requesting backup. Cops suspect that she was on drugs as well as .

So it's safe to say that this is surely not what Spears imagined when, five years ago in November 2021, she freed herself from a 13-year conservatorship, that saw all aspects of her life and finances managed by her father Jamie Spears and a lawyer.

The popular 'Free Britney' declared. Spears, they said, could finally live in peace.

How wrong they were.

What's followed has seemed nothing short of a slow-motion unraveling. Semi-naked pictures posted to her Instagram beside nonsensical captions. Videos of her manically dancing while twirling knives. Images, in May 2024, of her Los Angeles's Chateau Marmont hotel. And, in recent months, footage of her  - after being seen toasting a drinks.

Now, Spears' own official representative seems to be at a loss, telling the Daily Mail in no unclear terms on Thursday: 'This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in the long-overdue changes that need to occur in her life.

'Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue, needed plan to set her up for success.'

But why, one might ask, has that 'support' not been forthcoming sooner?

One source blames her inner circle, who 'portray themselves as her friends' but are 'out to get her any opportunity they can'.

But it may also be true that many of Spears's family and closest friends are terrified to intervene. In the wake of the Free Britney movement, many of those who had sort to help the singer during her conservatorship - even those with the correct intentions - came off terribly, and saw their reputations trashed amid widespread public outrage over Spears' perceived lack of freedoms.

'With Britney, everyone can't intervene or doesn't want to because of the Free Britney movement,' a source explained.

Spears' family – in particular her father Jamie, her mother Lynn Spears, and her younger sister Jamie Lynn Spears – have seen themselves especially demonized in recent years, with Spears herself often egging on critical fans.

In one memorable Instagram rant, Spears wrote: 'I'm incredibly lucky to even be alive with how my family treated me once in my life and now I'm scared of them. We can forgive as people but u [sic] don't ever forget.'

Just last month, she claimed she is still 'scared' of her family and 'lucky to be alive'.

All of which means, essentially, Spears is on her own. And this week's arrest is the 'last chance' to turn her life around, the source added.

Spears shares sons Preston, 20, and Jayden, 19, with ex-husband Kevin Federline, but there relationship hasn't been close.

Federline was granted full custody of the children in 2008 - and, in 2023, he relocated them to Hawaii. It was only last year that Spears reunited in LA with the now-adult boys.

A family insider tells the Daily Mail that Preston and Jayden are 'worried' for their mother following her arrest.

'Her boys are worried, very worried,' the insider said. 'They love her very much but they know that she's not okay. Everyone knows that she's not okay.'

However, according to another insider close to the family, none of this is to say that Spears' relatives are planning an intervention.

While they of course hope this week's arrest will serve as a 'wake-up call', Spears' family are said to have decided to wipe their hands clean of the situation.

'We're worried, of course, but at some point what can we even do? Everyone in this family got a lot of s*** because of the conservatorship and we still get a lot of s***, but this wasn't happening when she was being watched,' the insider said.

'She could have killed herself or someone else. So, maybe her family knew what they were doing [during the conservatorship] and everyone was doing it for her own good.

'She needs help and hopefully this is a wake-up call. Her entire family adores her and loves her so much. No one wants to see her fail, no one wants her to get hurt. But this is what we have always been trying to avoid.

'Are we gathering together to decide how to step in? Hell no. That would just be a disaster. But we can pray, we can cross our fingers, we can hope for the best. She knows we are here for her, and we always have been. But taking control? She needs to figure this out for herself.'

Wednesday night's debacle was not the first time Spears has attracted attention for her actions behind the wheel.

Just last month, she was spotted driving her Mercedes around LA as she held her cell phone to her face and appeared to be talking on the phone, which is illegal in California. She was not charged in relation to that incident.

Back in October, she had been  on a highway after a night out at an upscale Thousand Oaks eatery, with sources at the time fearing she was 'spiraling'.

Regarding the latest incident, a source said: 'I'm just happy that she didn't get hurt or that she didn't hurt anybody else, honestly.'

In recent days, Spears' on-again, off-again boyfriend, , has also come under the spotlight, with fans fearing that the ex-felon is not a good influence.

Concern around their relationship peaked in May 2024, when at the Chateau Marmont hotel.

Spears was seen clad in her underwear, clutching a pillow and appearing distressed as she left the hotel at night and was escorted to a waiting emergency vehicle.

It has been claimed that the pair got into a huge fight and that a woman matching Spears' description was 'harassing and threatening hotel employees and guests.'

Another source now paints a similar picture to the Daily Mail, claiming that Spears had previously caused a scene at another luxury establishment in LA.

'Britney was banned from Four Seasons Westlake Village,' the source said.

'She was showing up acting like she owned the place and acting erratically. She'd leave rooms trashed, come down to the pool and leave things everywhere and try to stay night after night. Nobody could tell her no. She would be loud and rowdy and often alone. Nobody could tell her what to do and eventually, she was banned.

'It's sad because it used to be her go-to spot with her family years ago and it's so close to her house. It's quiet and secluded, and she could come here to not be seen. It was her absolute favorite, but her behavior got out of control and despite countless warnings, there was no choice but to ban her.'

The Daily Mail has contacted the Four Seasons Westlake Village for comment.

As for Federline – who recently released a tell-all memoir about his relationship with Spears – another source said he hopes that Spears' DUI scandal will be the final 'straw that breaks the camel's back.'

'After all these years and all that Britney has gone through, the way people are now reacting gives him some sort of optimism that she will get back on track. Kevin believes that if it doesn't happen now, then only something worse will happen the next time,' the source said.

Following her arrest, Spears is scheduled for a court hearing on May 4.

The Daily Mail has contacted her representatives for comment.
