The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will be held March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood - and plenty of drama is  already expected to take place.

Nominee will likely be bringing fashion icon as his date, Conan O'Brien is hosting after the murder of his friend , is paying tribute to her late The Way We Were costar , and fashion icons and  will be presenting awards.

In its storied, 97-year history, the Oscars has served up an array of  truly shocking moments.

From Will Smith slapping ,  going bra-free while modeling a sheer dress and  kissing her brother on the lips  - the ceremony has ignited outrage and intrigue across the world.

Last year, Demi Moore went viral when she looked stony-faced after losing out on the Best Actress award to Mikey Madison in a shock result.

The Daily Mail takes a look back at some some of the stranger things that have happened during Hollywood's biggest night....

 SLAPPING CHRIS ROCK, 2022

Will Smith violently slapped Chris Rock on the face at the 94th in 2022.

The incident occurred on stage after Rock made a joke about Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, remarking that she was trying to be like in GI Jane.

Pinkett looked annoyed as she has said in the past she suffers from Alopecia, the medical term for hair loss, commonly characterized by thinning hair, bald patches, or total hair loss on the scalp or body.

The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air actor marched up on stage and wacked Rock across the face.

People did not know if the slap was a stunt or real. Still, the audience clapped when Smith went on to win the Best Actor award for King Richard.

ANGELINA JOLIE KISSING HER BROTHER ON THE LIPS, 2000

Angelina Jolie was the belle of the 72nd Academy Awards in 2000.

She was 24-years-old and had just won the Best Supporting Actress award for the Winona Ryder mental health film Girl, Interrupted.

After Jolie  got the gold, she kissed her brother, James Haven, on the lips when in an embrace as they wore matching black.

The smooch sparked major controversy as some fans felt it bordered on being incestuous.

Later the ex-wife of Brad Pitt said the move was purely platonic.

JENNIFER ANISTON PRESENTING AN AWARD IN FRONT OF EX BRAD PITT AND ANGELINA JOLIE, 2009

It was the 81st Academy Awards in 2009 when Jennifer Aniston wore a strapless golden gown as she took as her date to the splashy affair boyfriend at the time, John Mayer.

The star looked happy and radiant as she took the stage to present an Oscar.

But once up there, she was forced to look down at her ex-husband Brad Pitt and his girlfriend at the time, Angelina Jolie.

Jolie reportedly split up Pitt and Aniston when she costarred with him on Mr And Mrs Smith. That led to Aniston and Pitt divorcing in 2005 after only five years of matrimony.

Pitt and Jolie went on to wed in 2014 as they co-parented six children, but then they divorced in a very public and ugly way in 2019.

JENNIFER LOPEZ WEARING A DRESS THAT HAD A SEE-THROUGH TOP, 2001

Jennifer Lopez was hot off her films The Wedding Planner and Angel Eyes in 2001.

She was asked to present at the 73rd Oscars.

When the siren from the Bronx arrived on the red carpet, she made fans do a double take as she wore a beautiful gown with an unavoidable surprise.

The beauty - who had husband Cris Judd on her arm - went bra-free in a Zuhair Murad dress that had a sheer top portion and a non-see-through bottom part. T

When she got on stage to present the award, the camera zoomed in so close on her face that her chest could not be seen.

A STREAKER RUNNING ACROSS THE STAGE, 1974

A male streaker ran across the 46th Academy Award stage in 1974.

Oscar host David Niven was about to introduce Elizabeth Taylor as a presenter for Best Picture award when a naked man ran across the stage behind him.

The streaker was photographer Robert Opel, who worked for the LGBTQ magazine, The Advocate.

Niven was quick to make a crude joke: 'Isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?'

Taylor laughed it off.

At the 2024 Oscars - which was 50 years later - host Jimmy Kimmel and John Cena coordinated another streaker moment but the wrestler got cold feet and went on to present the Costume Design Oscar totally naked with just the envelope covering his private parts.

HALLE BERRY BEING PASSIONATELY KISSED BY ADRIEN BRODY, 2003

This move would not go over well today after the MeToo Movement changed Hollywood.

Out of nowhere, Adrien Brody dipped Halle Berry and planted a passionate kiss on her during the 75th Oscars in 2003.

The Bond girl had just announced that he had won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in The Pianist.

She was not able to react fast enough and just went with the stunt.

ANNE HATHAWAY HOSTING WITH JAMES FRANCO, 2011

They are both talented actors with so much to offer.

But when Anne Hathaway and James Franco co-hosted the 83rd Oscars in 2011, it was very awkward.

They did not seem to be on the same page: Hathaway was performing her heart out while Franco appeared dazed.

Several trolls accused of Franco of being 'stoned' or 'disinterested in the whole thing.' Hathaway was torn down for 'trying too hard.'

It has been described as one of the worst Oscar telecasts in history.

NICOLE KIDMAN CLAPPING WEIRD, 2017

Nicole Kidman looked as elegant as can be in a gold gown with her hair tucked into a fancy chignon while at the Academy Awards in 2017.

Her date for the night was her country music singer husband Keith Urban.

But when she clapped during a standing ovation, fans felt she was very strange.

The Australian held her fingers back and just used the palms of her hands like she had just gotten a manicure when she clapped away.

She was ridiculed for the move for years as the memes started flying.

GWYNETH PALTROW CRYING ON STAGE DURING HER WIN, 1999

In 1999 when Gwyneth Paltrow won Best Actress at the 71st annual Oscars for her leading role in Shakespeare in Love, she cried almost nonstop.

She was practically sobbing.

While appearing on the podcast Call Her Daddy in 2023, the Goop entrepreneur shared that she could pinpoint the moment that she first felt people turn on her.

According to Paltrow, it all began that Oscar night.

'I felt a real pivot on that night because I felt, like, up until that moment, everybody was kind of rooting for me in a way,' Paltrow told Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper. 'And then, when I won, it was, like, too much, and I could feel a real turn.'

The star also made a splash by wearing a pink Ralph Lauren gown and a diamond necklace as she was compared to Grace Kelly.

BARBRA STREISAND AND KATHARINE HEPBURN TIE, 1969

In 1969 there was a surprising tie at the 41st Academy Awards.

There were two winners for Best Actress: Barbra Streisand for her role in Funny Girl and Katharine Hepburn for her work in The Lion And The Winter.

It was surprising because Streisand was new on the acting scene, while Hepburn was legendary and already well-known at the Academy Awards.

Hepburn did not attend the Oscars that year while Streisand, wearing a sheer black outfit, beamed as she held her Oscar statuette.

ROBERTO BENIGNI WALKING ON CHAIRS, 1999

At the 71st Academy Awards in 1999, Italian actor and director Roberto Benigni was so thrilled that his heartfelt movie Life Is Beautiful won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film that he walked on the backs of seats

Some felt it was a pre-planned stunt but it was a spur-of-the-moment move.

Benigni was mocked for years for his untamed exuberance.

But his career endured as he went on to star in the 2012 Woody Allen film To Rome with Love and the 2019 adaptation of Pinocchio.

NEIL PATRICK HARRIS WALKING ON STAGE NUDE, 2015

No one knew Neil Patrick Harris was so buff until he pulled this awkward stunt.

When he hosted the 87th Oscars in 2015, Harris performed a gag where he was nude except for his small white underwear.

But audiences felt it was just an opportunity to show fans how fit his body was and he was slammed for the move.

However, going almost completely naked was a tribute to the film Birdman.

His career took a nosedive after his disastrous Oscar hosting duties and he pulled back from hosting after doing it successfully for so many years.

At the Oscars while performing the song How Far I'll Go, from Moana, Auli'l Cravalho was hit in the head with a flag.

The mistake was made by a background dancer.

The singer, who was only 16-years-old at the time, did not miss a beat as she kept performing.

MARLON BRANDO SENDING AN ACTIVIST TO NOT ACCEPT HIS AWARD, 1973

It was a first of its kind.

In 1973 Marlon Brando won the Oscar for Best Actor for playing Vito Corleone in The Godfather.

But the legendary actor was not there to accept.

Instead, he sent Sacheen Littlefeather, a Native American activist, to decline and protest his award at the 45th ceremony.

Brando already had a long history with the Academy Awards.

He earned his first Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951).

The actor was nominated again for roles in Viva Zapata! (1952) and Julius Caesar (1953). He won his first Academy Award for On the Waterfront (1954).
