The US-based Australian actress, 40, took to Instagram Stories to update her fans on the unfortunate incident, uploading a clip of herself edging across the side of her pool with a hose in hand.

Ruby, who was attempting to spray part of her garden that overlooked the pool, lost her footing and fell into the water, smashing her ribs on the pool's edge as she went down.

In the clip, a visibly distressed Ruby can be seen thrashing about in the water and grasping at her ribs following the dramatic fall.

'RIP to my ribs, and the rest of my summer. They are broken, multiple. Straight to hospital, did not pass go or collect $200,' she wrote with a laughing/crying emoji.

Over on Threads, Ruby shared the clip again alongside the caption: 'One second I'm here talking to you. The next I'm in the hospital with two broken ribs. What a bloody Monday.'

The Orange is the New Black star is no stranger to injury - back in 2019 she was hospitalised after performing a stunt for her leading role in CW's Batwoman.

'We thought that I had broken a rib or just fractured a rib and that it was, like, 6 to 12 weeks of healing,' she told The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon at the time.

'So, then I had 6 to 12 weeks of chronic pain and just sort of kept assuming that was what it was,' she went on.

Her pain turned out to be caused by two herniated discs in her spine.

'It was really, really terrifying,' she said, explaining that she could have been left a paraplegic if her injury wasn't seen to immediately.

Reflecting on the incident in a recent interview with TV Week, Ruby said her injuries were so traumatic that her brain would 'literally shut down and turn off' when she tried to talk about it publicly.

'The memories around it were so bad that I had to put myself into a trauma facility for three months in 2021, so I could learn how to talk about what happened without fainting,' she said.

'It was a horrendous injury, and I was so very alone throughout the whole experience.'
