Patrick Muldoon's is even more heartbreaking given that he had finally shaken off his demons and was enjoying a renewed career high - and had even found his 'life partner'.

The Days of Our Lives actor died of an apparent heart attack at his Beverly Hills home on Sunday after being found unconscious in the shower by his producer girlfriend, Miriam Rothbart. He was only 57.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, his sister Shana Muldoon Zappa, 48, said he had no known health conditions and was in peak physical fitness, making it all the more difficult for the family to fathom this 'unbelievable nightmare.'

But some have been left questioning whether the 'wild lifestyle' of Muldoon's past played a part in his untimely death.

'It was an open secret on Days [of Our Lives] that Patrick had addiction problems,' a high-ranking insider on the soap told the Daily Mail. 'He would often come to work hungover. He sometimes couldn't remember his lines and would need to do take after take. Sometimes five or six times.

'He tried to hide his habits, but it became increasingly more obvious. He was called in to execs who asked him what was going on. He said he was trying to get clean and begged them to give him a chance. He was getting by on his looks and charisma. He said it got worse when he was doing gigs with his band The Sleeping Masses.'
