For most families, a child turning 18 is a major milestone marked with toasts and a blow-out party. And when twins reach adulthood? The celebrations are usually twice as joyful and emotional.

But for , the impending 18th birthdays next month of Vivienne and Knox, his twins with former wife and the youngest of their sprawling brood, will be a day of profound sorrow.

Because the Oscar-winning actor believes the day will mark the 'final exclamation point' in what his friends call 'the most successful campaign of parental alienation in history.'

Pitt, 62, who once described the six children he shared with 51-year-old Jolie as 'my entire world,' has effectively been shut out of their lives completely.

He has no contact, has attended no graduations, has missed out on school plays and dance recitals and will spend Father's Day next Sunday as he has for the past few years. Alone.

What's more, the Daily Mail understands that, like their older siblings Maddox, Shiloh, Zahara and Pax, the twins will legally file to have Pitt's name formerly removed from their surname 'within days' of their birthday.

On Friday, it was from his high school diploma when he graduated from Fusion Academy in Los Angeles earlier this month.

A source close to Brad told the Daily Mail: 'We're at the finish line. Angelina has won. This has been a comprehensive and deliberate effort to fully alienate the children from their father and dropping the Pitt name from theirs is an exclamation point. She has completed the most effective campaign of parental alienation ever but at what cost?'

And while onlookers might struggle to comprehend what could possibly motivate such a 'campaign', the Daily Mail has been told that it was born of a personal slight for which Jolie has never forgiven her ex. But more of that later.

To fully understand the devastation Pitt feels, one has to contrast his situation now with the joy he felt on August 23, 2014, when he and Jolie tied the knot at their magnificent Chateau Miraval estate in Correns, France.

All six children took part in the ceremony and Jolie wore a custom Versace gown that featured colorful drawings by the six children sewn onto the back of the dress and the veil.

Back then, 'Brangelina,' as the couple was dubbed, were considered the 'perfect' blended family. Brad formally adopted Angelina's two oldest children, Maddox and Pax, then aged 13 and 10. Together, they had adopted Zahara in 2005 when she was just six months old and then had three biological children, Shiloh, born in 2006, and the twins in 2008.

A source who knew the family back then told the Daily Mail: 'Honestly, when you saw them together at things like dance recitals, it was like you were looking at the perfect blended family, albeit one with the best-looking mother and father you've ever seen. Brad was a fantastic dad, very hands-on. He would joke it was the role he was born to play.'

Indeed, Pitt's own upbringing in small-town Springfield, Missouri, was an idyllic Midwest start in life, playing with his younger siblings Doug and Julie in the cornfields and rivers of the Ozarks, which surrounded their home.

The Daily Mail visited Springfield when Brad first shot to fame as a hunky drifter in 1991's Thelma and Louise and spoke to his parents William and Jane (who passed away last year, aged 84).

They were bursting with pride at Brad's Hollywood success but insisted family would always come first.

Jane said: 'Family is everything to us. Brad always had big dreams, but part of that dream has always been to have a family of his own.'

Pitt was inseparable from his brood and was frequently photographed carrying sleepy toddlers through airports and riding bikes with his children.

Pitt told one interviewer: 'I always thought I'd drift through life. Then having children gave me clarity.'

One person who has known Pitt for years said: 'When he and Angie were together with their kids running everywhere it was the happiest I've ever seen him.'

Then it all turned dark.

Pitt infamously had a red-wine-fueled altercation on a private jet flying from France to Los Angeles in September 2016. Jolie alleged he grabbed her, shook her and poured beer and wine on some of their kids.

The FBI investigation lasted months and ended with a 53-page report in which authorities, including child services, cleared Pitt of any wrongdoing.

He immediately sought help for his alcohol problem and remains sober to this day.

Jolie has had primary physical custody of the children since their divorce

'He fully made amends to Angie and the kids,' the source said. 'Look, it was something he deeply regretted. He was wrong on the plane. No one is defending what he did. It wasn't criminal but he held up his hands and apologized, he got himself sober, he made amends.'

Now, for the first time, the Daily Mail can reveal that sources close to Pitt believe that part of Jolie's deep-rooted animus towards her ex is because she attempted a reconciliation with him after that plane incident - and was rebuffed by him.

Another source with knowledge of the situation denied this, saying that Jolie did not seek 'reconciliation' but instead: 'Participated in years of family therapy with Pitt and the children, for everyone to try to heal after the events that led to her divorce.'

A source close to Team Pitt said: 'Once they split, the judge handling their case - the same judge incidentally who officiated at their wedding in France - spent months on the custody case. The children were interviewed by therapists and had their say.'

The judge ruled the pair should share 50/50 custody of the children but that decision was later thrown out because a California court ruled the judge failed to make timely disclosures about other business relationships he had with Pitt's attorneys.

Jolie has had primary physical custody of the children ever since.

Pitt fought to try and get shared custody but dropped that legal effort in March 2024. He was given legal visitation rights to the twins, which will end when they turn 18.

It is not known when Pitt last saw any of his children, but the estrangement is believed to be total. He has not been photographed with any of his children in more than six years.

'Having visitation rights and having the children want to see him are two different things,' the friend sighed.

A source with knowledge of Jolie's situation said: 'If he isn't close to the kids, it's because of the harm he has done. He wasn't honest about his actions, and it affected the trust between them. It's been very hard for the kids. No one knows, except them, how bad it has been.'

Those within Team Pitt point to some of the 'troubles' the children have experienced as proof that a lack of a father figure has ramifications, while those on Team Jolie shrug that off, saying the children are all remarkably well-adjusted and polite.

One mother whose child attended the same dance class as Shiloh, 20, at the Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles, told the Daily Mail: 'Considering how Hollywood messes people up, Angelina's children are remarkably normal. Shiloh is extremely talented as a dancer. She wants to dance and do choreography professionally. You would never know she's the daughter of two of the most famous people on the planet. She's down-to-earth and shy.'

Shiloh has been described as 'gender fluid' because she went through a period of dressing in boys' clothes and wanting to be called John, but the mother said: 'She went through a period of experimentation as all kids do. She's a great kid. Everyone loves her.'

Eldest son Maddox, 24, is working in film and was an assistant director on his mother's movies Couture and Maria.

Pax, 22, is a budding photographer. He was pictured stumbling drunk out of the famed Chateau Marmont on the Sunset Strip last year, but the mother who knows the family said: 'What kid doesn't have nights like that?

'The difference for Pax is that his nights are caught on camera by the paparazzi.' Pax was hospitalized with a head injury after falling off his e-bike in July 2024. He was not wearing a helmet. He was involved in another e-bike crash when he collided with a parked car six months later, but escaped with just cuts and bruises.

Zahara, 21, graduated with honors from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, with a psychology degree. She wants to follow her mother into humanitarian work.

Knox is an avid athlete and loves martial arts, including Muay Thai. He recently graduated high school - cheered on by his mom - and dyed his hair orange to celebrate. Meanwhile, his twin sister Vivienne is a Broadway enthusiast who worked as a production assistant on The Outsiders. Angelina has described her youngest daughter as 'a massive theater head' who wants to work behind the scenes rather than in front of the cameras.

Pointedly, when she worked with Jolie in 2024 for the Broadway show The Outsiders, Vivienne listed her name as 'Vivienne Jolie' in the playbill.

This week, Zahara, now 21, filed court documents in Los Angeles to drop his surname from her legal name. Maddox, 24, Pax, 22 and Shiloh, 19 all no longer use the Pitt name publicly and are all believed to be in various stages of formally petitioning the courts to remove 'Pitt' from their legal names.

One with knowledge of the situation said simply: 'The children are now adults and make their own decisions, which deserve respect. If they choose to distance themselves from him, it comes from the pain and harm [he caused].'

But, however physically and emotionally distant he may be, financially at least Pitt has provided for all the children.

Sources tell the Daily Mail that Jolie received $64 million for selling her half of Chateau Miraval and sold a Winston Churchill painting gifted to her by Pitt for $11.5 million.

Pitt reportedly gave her an $8 million loan to buy her home in Los Feliz - now on the market for $30 million - and around $1.3 million in expenses for the children.

'He has always been very generous towards the children, despite the estrangement. He's a man who always does the right thing,' a source close to him added.

For now, Pitt is said to be dreading Father's Day.

An acquaintance said: 'Father's Day is very tough for him because he spends it alone. There are no kids running up to him with sweet handwritten cards and homemade gifts and there is no storytelling over brunch. He still has his own father, which is great, but it's not the same. He wanted to be honored on Father's Day.

'He feels he has lost his children forever, that there is no turning back now.

'It has been a decade with little to no contact with his children. They don't really know him, and he doesn't really know them, which makes him terribly sad.'

When approached by the Daily Mail, spokespersons for Pitt and Jolie declined to comment.

To deal with the pain, Pitt has 'drowned himself in work.'

Pitt has been dating jeweler Ines de Ramon, whom he met in 2022

'He works all the time. When he is not starring in films he is producing them, sometimes at the same time. Then he has his endorsement deals and his winery.'

Pitt has just filmed Heart of the Beast and The Adventures of Cliff Booth which will both be released later this year.

He is constantly on the move.

The acquaintance said: 'He has many houses - in Carmel, France, LA - and he runs around like he is running from his sadness. It's a sad story, really, this handsome man who has so much money and fame and he is just heartbroken.'

He has found love again with jeweler Ines de Ramon, whom he met in 2022.

'Many things in his life are good,' the longtime friend said. 'But the family stuff is always in the background.'

One friend said: 'He will never give up hoping for a miracle. His door is always open. He hopes the children find their way back to him.'
