The Hollywood superstar is currently Down Under filming a sequel to his Apple+ WWII epic, Greyhound.

Hanks attempted to go incognito for the commute in a grey sweater, khaki bucket hat and dark sunglasses.

However, one eagle-eyed fan recognised the Forrest Gump actor boarding at North Sydney station.

'I knew as soon as he entered the carriage that it was him, because I have strong facial recognition skills, and his face moves in a very particular rubbery way,' Ann G told North Sydney Living

The besotted fan was quick to take a photo of the Saving Private Ryan star after telling her daughter, 'I think that tall guy over there is Tom Hanks.'

Noticing that he caught a fan's attention, Hanks smiled, and the mother and daughter introduced themselves.

The fan told the publication: 'I approached him, and I just said, "Please tell me you ARE Tom Hanks!"'

The box office favourite put a finger to his lips with a grin and said: 'I don't want to be recognised and cause a scene.'

Ann G continued: 'So I whispered, "Can I please have a photo with you?" and he smiled and said, "We need to get out at the next stop, let's do this!"

Hanks got off the train at Barangaroo Station, accompanied by some companions.

According to the report, Hanks' sighting on the Metro happened just hours after the star surprised the staff at The Greg Chappell Cricket Centre in North Sydney.

The A-lister was accompanied by his son, Truman Hanks, 30, who the actor shares with wife Rita Wilson, 69.

Store manager John Doughty didn't notice Tom at first, due to his 'laid-back' and almost 'messy' appearance, the Daily Telegraph reported.

'I didn't actually recognise him to start off with,' Doughty told the publication.

Hanks spent 'some time' in the store, and he and his son were the last two customers left in the shop by the end of their spree.

The two picked up a beach cricket set, some caps, wicketkeeping gloves, cricket balls and shorts, the publication reported.

Doughty said Hanks was a 'really nice guy' and a 'typical American' who was loud and animated during the outing.

Hanks' new film is a sequel to his 2022 Apple+ streaming hit Greyhound.

The actor scripted the drama, which is set on board a US Navy destroyer battling the enemy in the North Atlantic during World War II.

The sequel, which Hanks also wrote, follows his character Commander Ernst 'Ernie' Krause as he heads to fight the war in the Pacific.
