John Candy's former castmate Amy Madigan has given rare insight into what the late comedian was really like behind-the-scenes shortly before the 32nd anniversary of his death. 

The 75-year-old actress - who has - opened up about the topic during an interview with People published on Wednesday. 

Madigan starred with Candy in the 1989 comedy Uncle Buck, which had additionally cast , Garrett M. Brown and Jean Louisa Kelly. 

Just five years later, the actor passed away at the age of 43 on March 4, 1994 after suffering from a heart attack. 

Madigan - who had played Candy's onscreen girlfriend in the movie - labeled the comedian as 'the kindest, most generous person.' 

She also recalled that when it came to shooting scenes for the film with Candy, there were moments where she struggled to stay in character.

Madigan starred with Candy in the 1989 comedy Uncle Buck, which had also additionally cast Macaulay Culkin, Garrett M. Brown and Jean Louisa Kelly

'I'm supposed to be angry with him as his girlfriend and he would be off camera and it was really hard to keep a straight face,' the actress recalled to the outlet. 

Madigan added that she 'had a lot of fun' working with the actor before sharing that she also 'got to know Mr. Candy very well.'

'We just kind of hit it off. We had a great time. He was the king of ad libs. He and John Hughes had worked together before, so they had a really neat shorthand,' she said, referencing to the film's director; seen in February in Beverly Hills 

Madigan expressed that Candy had been a 'real family guy' and 'treated everybody so equitably and was just such a cool person.' 

She added, 'He was just that guy that you wanted him to be. He would really work with you to figure out what you needed and wanted as an actor - which is what you hope that actors do, but oftentimes they don't.'

During the production of the movie, the actress also remembered how both she and Candy would grab meals together.

'We went out to dinner a bunch of times and I got to know him and know his family a little bit. It was really a pretty great experience.' 

Candy was known for showcasing his comedic skills on the Canadian sketch comedy series titled Second City Television.

Other films he appeared in are National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), Planes, Trains And Automobiles (1987), The Great Outdoors (1988) and Home Alone (1990).

A documentary film called John Candy: I Like Me was released last year in October 2025 and . 

Colin Hanks directed the project and was also one of the producers along with Ryan Reynolds.

At his memorial that took place shortly after his death, O'Hara had given an emotional speech as she remembered the actor and close friend. 

'He set a good example in so many ways. He was a protector,' she explained at the time, per People

'He cared if he felt you've been wronged in any way, he risked everything to make it right, to make you know you were worth something, too. In a business that indulges the weaker souls where the insecure lend other words with far too much meaning...'

Madigan has been keeping busy after raking in critical acclaim for her performance in the 2025 movie Weapons. 

In the mystery horror film, the actress portrayed the role of Gladys - and has since garnered a number of nominations and accolades.

Last month in January, she won the Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Madigan has been keeping busy after raking in critical acclaim for her performance in the 2025 movie Weapons (seen above) 

Madigan has also received an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress - 40 years after her first Academy Award nomination for Twice In A Lifetime in 1986. 

'I'm just kind of stunned by the whole journey that I've been on,' she told People as she reacted to her recent Oscar nomination. 

'This is just kind of another piece of it that I was not expecting, but I'm just very happy and gratified and it's just a reflection on the film Weapons and how people are responding to it. So that - nothing is a better feeling than that.'

Madigan has also been nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role at the upcoming Actor Awards (formerly SAG Awards). The ceremony is set to take place on Sunday, March 1.
