It was the first time back on the air for the media veteran after a week off, and Carrie joked it was a 'one-night only' appearance before revealing her shocking news.

'And so I have to take some time off work to go get them fixed because if I don't get them fixed now, then they are going to be permanently damaged and that would be very unfortunate for my job,' she said.

Fighting back tears, Carrie said, talking about her break and her health issues was making her 'upset'.

'I'll be fine, sorry … I don't know why it's making me so upset. I just don't like letting people down, and I don't like letting myself down.

'I also really love my job, and I don't want to be forced to never do it again,' she continued.

'So I'm gonna take some time off and go get it fixed.'

Carrie said that she did not know how long her treatment would take or when she would be back on air.

Elsewhere in the segment, Carrie admitted that her voice had not been 'right' for some time.
