Baz Luhrmann

The renowned film director, 63, channelled his inner Elvis Presley as he swept his grey locks back into a sleek, combed style with a hint of a mullet in the back.

Celebrating the opening of the Costume Art exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, he slipped into a tailored black suit with eye-catching pastel blue cuffs.

Diamond cuff links sparkled at his wrists, along with a massive blue stone on his pinkie finger, which matched his tinted glasses.

Meanwhile, his wife, costume designer Catherine, 61, donned a conservative black gown for the occasion, with pastel blue panels and sparkling embellishments.

Sporting a wide smile, she cuddled up to her love while making her way into the venue, wearing her trademark bold blue-framed glasses.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit, also known as the Met Gala,

The theme of this year's event – widely considered the biggest night in celebrity red carpet fashion – is Costume Art, while the dress code is Fashion Is Art.

The dress code calls on the A-list attendees to explore how designers use the human body as a blank canvas.

Leading the charge is a powerhouse trio of co-chairs, with Beyonce, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams joining forces with Vogue's global editorial director Anna Wintour to oversee fashion's biggest night.

It's the first time tennis superstar Venus has co-chaired the gala.

Nicole previously co-chaired the star-studded event in 2003 and 2005, while Beyonce was an honorary chair in 2013.

The New York City museum will pair historical and contemporary garments from the Costume Institute for the exhibition, which will be loosely divided into three categories, namely the classical and the nude body, ageing and pregnant bodies, and the anatomical body.

The exhibit - set to unveil the Met's sprawling new Conde M Nast Galleries - has been made possible by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sanchez, who are the lead sponsors and honorary co-chairs.
