BAFTAs Go Vegan: Stars Feast on Plants!

The BAFTAs are again embracing veganism after vowing to reduce the environmental impact of the ceremony.

On Sunday night, the biggest stars in Hollywood will be tucking into a mainly plant-based menu, while the award show's host Alan Cumming has planned an animal rights stunt with the charity PETA.

While there is still some meat and dairy on the menu, the majority of the dishes are centered around seasonable vegetables - with vegan canapes and starters, an option of a vegan main course, and a third of the dessert options vegan.

Ahead of the guests taking their seats, they will see longtime vegan host Alan, 61, in his new campaign with PETA urging attendees to only wear vegan leather.

A giant billboard has been erected close to Royal Festival Hall - where the ceremony takes place - in which Alan parodies Marlon Brando in The Wild One while urging fans to ditch animal skins as a 'Rebel with a Cause'.

Once inside, the guests will enjoy a menu planned by premium caterer Caper & Berry, who were 'inspired by the nostalgia and sense of occasion associated with classic cinema intervals.'

The evening begins with snacks including roasted maple pumpkin rolls, woodland mushroom toast topped with crispy sage, and Cornish sea salt crisp breads.

These are followed by a starter of celeriac and apple mille-feuille with chive oil and pumpkin.

For the main course, guests have a choice of either truffle chicken with a chicken and mushroom pithivier, butter-roasted potatoes and Madeira jus, or a vegan option of caramelised leek and pumpkin pithivier with tarragon sauce.

Dessert is presented on usherette trays in colourful, bespoke cups - a tribute to traditional cinema ice creams.

Options include a popcorn sundae with chocolate mousse, toffee popcorn, whipped burnt caramel and white chocolate.

BAFTA revealed they had intended the menu 'to be both indulgent and inclusive.'

The organisation told Daily Mail: 'For this month’s BAFTA Awards, Caper & Berry will bring a sustainability-led approach that is as considered as the celebration itself.

'With ISO 14001 accreditation, a clear Net Zero pathway aligned to the UN Race to Zero, and full carbon measurement across all three GHG scopes, every menu decision is data-led and impact-aware.

'Seasonal, locally sourced ingredients from regenerative producers are prioritised, while a zero-to-landfill policy, and activity-based carbon reporting ensure measurable accountability.

'From low-carbon menu design to post-event emissions reporting, sustainability will be woven seamlessly into the guest experience, proving that world-class catering and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand on one of the industry’s biggest stages.'

To drink, the guests start with a champagne reception, before sipping wines from Casillero del Diablo.

Three bottles are on offer during the evening: Casillero del Diablo Reserva Especial Cabernet Sauvignon, Casillero del Diablo Sauvignon Blanc and Casillero Zero Sparkling 0.5 percent alcohol-free.

The veg-heavy menu follows on from last year's catering, in which Caper & Berry's catering carbon footprint aligned with BAFTA and ALBERT sustainability standards.

Menus were consciously designed to avoid high-impact red meat, while the team tracked emissions across food, transport, crew travel and waste, identifying food as the primary hotspot and targeting staff catering for further reductions.

A zero-to-landfill policy, reusable service ware and waste-conscious sourcing underpinned operations.

One Battle After Another will be no doubt be hoping to win one award after another, with Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film earning a remarkable fourteen nominations at this year's ceremony.

But it faces stiff competion, notably from supernatural horror Sinners, with thirteen nominations, and Hamnet, director Chloé Zhao's moving drama about the death of Shakespeare's only son, with eleven.

Adapted for the screen from Maggie O'Farrell's award-winning novel about the Bard's family life, Hamnet has broken the record for the most nominations for a female-directed film in BAFTA history.

Elsewhere, Marty Supreme and Timothée Chalamet will be hoping to make it three times lucky after earning eleven BAFTA nominations, including Best Film and Best Actor, following recent wins at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards

Frankenstein and Sentimental Value each have eight whilst there are five nominations for I Swear and Bugonia, and three nominations for The Ballad of Wallis Island, Pillion and F1.

The ceremony will be broadcast at 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK, and on E! in North America at 8:00pm Eastern Time. The awards will also be available on a number of other broadcasters internationally.
