Australian Actress from Neighbours and Blue Heelers Dies

Australian television has lost one of its most elegant and enduring stars, with veteran actress and voice-over artist Suzy Cato-Gashler dying aged 76 after a long illness.

The beloved performer passed away in on Saturday, bringing to a close a glittering career that spanned more than five decades across television, film, theatre and modelling.

Her death was confirmed by Australian media studies author Nigel Giles on social media.

'Vale Suzy Cato-Gashler, actress and voiceover artist whose career spanned more than fifty years. Predominantly a screen actress, she appeared in series such as Cop Shop, Prisoner, The Power, The Passion, Neighbours, Blue Heelers,' Giles wrote.

Known to generations of viewers for memorable roles in iconic dramas, Suzy became a familiar face on screens throughout the country thanks to her commanding on-screen presence. 

Though she graduated from the University of Melbourne with an Economics degree, the glamorous brunette took a very different path to fame. 

She first found success as a model and magazine covergirl before becoming a popular television commercial personality, appearing regularly on The Don Lane Show.

By the 1970s, Suzy had successfully transitioned into acting, landing guest roles in classic Australian police dramas including Matlock Police and Homicide.

She later became a fan favourite on Prisoner playing the glamorous, fur-wearing socialite Marianne De Vere - one of many deliciously sharp-tongued characters she portrayed throughout her long career.

But it was her starring role in Channel Seven's lavish daytime soap The Power, The Passion that cemented her place in Australian television history.

Cast as the sophisticated Anna Wright in 1989, Suzy appeared in more than 160 episodes and delivered what many fans regarded as riveting performance as the stylish daughter of powerful family patriarch Gordon, played by Kevin Miles.

She starred alongside a stellar ensemble that included George Mallaby and Julian McMahon.

Over the decades, Suzy’s extensive television résumé continued to grow with appearances in Halifax f.p., Blue Heelers, Stingers, House Husbands and The Doctor Blake Mysteries.
