Anna Faris is back in the spotlight amid the hype for the long-awaited sixth Scary Movie film.

But before being asked to reprise her iconic role as Cindy Campbell after a 20-year hiatus, the 49-year-old actress largely believed her acting career was slowing down.

'I had been coming around to the idea of Hollywood sort of putting me out to pasture,' she confessed to Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday. 'And that was OK.'

Faris has not appeared in a major theatrical film since the star-studded dramedy The Estate in 2022. Her last leading role in a major theatrical film was in 2018's critically panned remake of Overboard.

Over the last decade, much of Faris's work has been in TV, including voice acting on The Simpsons and her co-leading role on the CBS sitcom Mom, which she exited in 2020.

But that all changed in early 2025, when she got the call to return to the Scary Movie franchise by creators Shawn and Marlon Wayans aka the Wayans brothers.

Anna Faris admitted she thought her acting career was slowing down prior to receiving the call to star in Scary Movie 6; seen on June 2

Faris is part of the original Scary Movie cast, with the first film premiering in 2000.

The comedy franchise parodies popular horror films, including Scream, The Exorcist, I Know What You Did Last Summer and more iconic titles, while also poking fun at pop culture and famous people.

When Faris was asked to return to Scary Movie, she was not only working less but she had also just lost her home to the Palisades Fire in January 2025; seen with Regina Hall in Scary Movie 6 (2026)

Shawn and Marlon return as producers, co-writers and stars in the upcoming Scary Movie 6, which is set for a June 6 theatrical release.

Faris told PEOPLE that the film is a 'celebration for the Wayan brothers' and described their return, as well as her being asked back, as a 'healing' experience and a 'victory.'

'It didn't matter what happened, how the movie was received. At the moment, it felt so good for me personally,' Faris said.

'It's like the cherry on top that audiences are so excited to see it. It's a really special time in my life. I feel grateful.

'It's a little healing in the sense that we got to be back together again.

'That is, for me, a personal celebration because I got to thank them. I'd never thanked them properly,' Faris concluded.

Faris last appeared on screen in the 2024 Prime Video movie My Spy: The Eternal City, along with WWE icon Dave Bautista.

'So to have this opportunity to thank them - I got to thank them every day,' she said of the Wayans brothers; (L-R_ Marlon Wayans, Faris and Shawn Wayans seen on May 30

When asked about where the Scary Movie franchise will go after the sixth installment, Faris replied: 'I don't think it dies. I don't know, at least not for me'
