Although they never married, Victoria began calling herself Victoria Adams Wood and even used the name on the band’s early merchandise.

In 1996 the pair split after being together for six years in total.

She previously said in her ITV documentary Being Victoria in 2002: ‘For some reason we got engaged. He was an alarm engineer. If only he’d stayed in the cupboard that I met him in at my mum’s house.’

Mark was reportedly unhappy about the comment and went on to get his own back as he dished on their sex life in a 2004 Channel 5 documentary called Victoria Beckham’s Secrets.

He claimed she ‘went like an express train’ and that ‘the boobs she’s got now are certainly not the ones she had back then.’

A Channel 5 spokesperson said at the time: ‘As they always say, revenge is a dish best-served cold.

‘Mark has never spoken before in public about his relationship with Victoria but feels it is time to set the record straight.

‘Mark was quite hurt by what she said and doesn’t intend to spare Victoria’s blushes.’

Discussing her split, Victoria also told Big Breakfast host Denise Van Outen : ‘It wasn’t the right person for me, I wasn’t enjoying myself, so that had to end.’

She also joked that she never gave him the ring back as she added: ‘I didn’t give him the ring back either! I’ve still got it because it was a wicked ring. Isn’t that horrible? It makes me sound really unrealistic.’

While Victoria went on to fall in love with David, Mark was reportedly left heartbroken over the split.

Prior to her comment on Being Victoria, he had only nice things to say about the singer as he told The People in 1997: ‘It was a very special relationship. But that part of my life is over.

‘It’s sad because we were together for a long time. But she’s got what she always wanted and I’m proud of her.’

Victoria was introduced to David in 1997 and just over a year after meeting, in January 1998, the couple ended weeks of speculation when they announced that they were engaged to marry.
