Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson join Steven Spielberg for dinner at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica

Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson dined with a very famous friend on Sunday night.

The Castaway star and Rita, both 67, grabbed a bite to eat at the celeb hot spot Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica with none other than Steven Spielberg, 77.

The trio were all dressed casually with the Sleepless in Seattle actress in jeans and a grey sweatshirt with a midi-length white coat over it all.

The You’ve Got Mail actor wore black jeans with a dark green sweater and grey sports coat.

Meanwhile, the E.T. director wore jeans with a black jacket and some very cool blue suede high-top sneakers.

Spielberg and Tom go way back and have worked on several films together including Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, Bridge of Spies, and The Post.

They’ve also collaborated as producers on the TV series Band of Brothers and The Pacific.

Now, the old friends are co-producing the AppleTV+ miniseries Masters of the Air, which explores the ‘aerial wars of WWII through the enlisted men of the Mighty Eighth Air Force of the United States Army Air Forces,’ according to an official synopsis.

Hanks and Spielberg have been trying to get the series on the air for 12 years.

The cast features some of the hottest young actors around, including Austin Butler, Oscar-nominated for Elvis, Callum Turner (The Boys In The Boat), new Doctor Who lead Ncuti Gatwa and Saltburn’s Barry Keoghan.

It’s cost an estimated £235 million to make but, as Tom Hanks says, no one involved wanted to make it ‘unless it could be as good as Band Of Brothers’.

Thirty sources, including memoirs and historian Donald L Miller’s eponymous book, were used to collate the storylines because, says the show’s creator John Orloff, ‘Steven, Tom and Gary were insistent everything on screen be true.’

Tom explains the crews’ mission. ‘It was the battle between good and evil, because that’s what the Second World War was. But Don’s book incorporated the human element along with the madness. The division between “I’m safe” or “I could get killed in the blink of an eye” is about as specific as you can get.’

So alongside the stunning aerial sequences are the personal stories, which form the heart of the series, notably the friendship between Majors Gale Cleven and John Egan (Austin and Callum).

Steven Spielberg explained why he keeps returning to World War II as subject matter. ‘

It’s important we create a library where young people can understand what it took to keep our country free,’ he says. ‘We need to carry the sacrifice and contributions of that generation into future generations.’

Spielberg’s resume is dominated by World War II movies including Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List.

He also director and / or produced Band of Brothers, The Pacific and Flags of our Fathers all dealing with the war.
