Ten’s Gladiators Reboot Mercilessly Mocked by Viewers for “Cringe” Use of “Fake Crowd” and “Cheap” Production: “Bodybuilders Playfully Hitting Gym Enthusiasts with Oversized Cotton Buds”

Channel Ten has launched its new reboot of classic 1990s reality show Gladiators.

And viewers tuning in had a lot to say about the series, with many sharing amusing opinions on X, formerly known as Twitter.

‘Seems like they spent all their money on insurance and ran out of money on production’ wrote one person.

‘Some real creativity from the makers of #GladiatorsAU. It’s exactly the same but worse’ complained another.

‘I can’t believe that #NinjaWarriorAU got cancelled and in 2024 instead we get bodybuilders hitting wannabe gym junkies in the head with oversized cotton buds for 30 seconds’ someone else wrote.

‘Curious. For those of us watching Gladiators, are we all cringing yet or just me? Contestants don’t even look like they’re trying. Gladiators look like they’re trying even LESS. And hosts are trying TOO MUCH!’ a viewer said.

‘It feels like they’ve lent a bit too far into the cringe that it’s actually cringe. Should have just left it at seriously camp’ yet one more wrote.

One of the key complaints was that the show doesn’t use a live studio audience, instead relying on cheering and clapping sound effects.

‘There’s no people in the crowd. Where did those cheers come from? Hahaha’ wrote one person.

‘I wish they wouldn’t try and pretend there’s an audience but considering how cheap the budget for this would have been this is a great revival so far’ one more agreed.

‘Have they added in fake crowd noises?!’ someone else asked.

Others joked about the frequent injuries on the show, comparing the show to a spoof version that aired on Sketch comedy show Full Frontal where contestants were left horribly maimed by the competition while jovially interviewed by the hosts.

There were some fans though, with one person saying, ‘So good to see #Gladiators back on TV. I’m extra glad it’s real contestants rather than chucking celebrities on’.

Hosted by Beau Ryan and Liz Ellis, the extreme sports contest is a revival of the classic 90s cult reality series where contestants battle in a stylised arena.
