Tears flow as Bridgerton’s Penelope and Colin wed in series three

Bridgerton series three finally saw Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton’s friendship blossom into a romance.

After a slow burner in part one, fans were left wanting more as they had to wait until episode four for Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton) to give into their passions in a steamy carriage scene.

And now the pair have finally tied the knot as they walked down the aisle, marking another Bridgerton marriage.

While it perhaps wasn’t the fairytale wedding fans expected, after Penelope’s secret identity as Lady Whistledown threatened to drive a wedge through the family, viewers were still moved by the scene.

Fans took to Twitter as they were left sobbing during the scene as the two love birds finally tied the knot.

However the couple, and Penelope’s best friend Eloise, decided to put the past behind them for the beautiful ceremony.

Another added: ‘Penelope’s wedding dress is stunning. No doubt inspiration for a slew of brides in the future’.

However the wedding wasn’t a complete fairytale as after their first dance, the wedding breakfast was abruptly interrupted by Queen Charlotte demanding for Lady Whistledown to reveal her identity.

As the Bridgerton’s remain in the rumour nervously, Penelope looks visibly shaken as she chooses not to reveal her identity in front of the entire family.

Later, while her and Colin should be enjoying their first night of married bliss, her husband decides to sleep on the sofa as he cannot forgive her for refusing to give up her job as Lady Whistledown.

Yet while viewers may be left disappointed at the lack of passion post wedding, they certainly won’t be before as the pair engage in a racy explicit sex scene in episode five.

In the six-minute scene, Penelope was being comforted by Luke after a row with her mother about her engagement, during which time they began kissing.

Luke then began to grope his fiancée before undoing her corset and admiring her naked figure.

The pair then moved to the chaise longue where Luke’s bare bottom was displayed before they touched each other intimately.

They checked in on each other constantly, with Penelope stating: ‘tell me what to do’, with Luke offering: ‘you could touch me.’

After warning his virginal bride that this ‘may hurt’ the pair then had sex, with Penelope asking at the end ‘can we do it again?’ to which Colin quipped: ‘give me 5 minutes, maybe 10.’

The critics’ views on Bridgerton series three part two

Evening Standard

Rating:

Vicky Jessop: ‘Steamy this is not. Watching it feels like seeing two teenagers fumbling their way through an awkward clinch. Is Bridgerton losing its touch? Francesca’s love affair with Lord John Stirling is snooze-worthy – all those painful silences! Yes, we get it, they’re shy!’

The Telegraph

Rating:

Anita Singh: ‘Aside from Penelope’s heaving bosom, though, this third series remains a dud. Her extensive sex scene with Colin has a cringe-making quality – think EL James’ Fifty Shades with all of the terrible dialogue but none of the nipple clamps. Away from the main couple, the plot barely exists.’

The Independent

Rating:

Kate Rosseinsky: ‘The wheels are starting to come off the Bridgerton carriage – and the final two episodes will need to be pretty dramatic to get things back on track.’

The Daily Mail

Rating:

Christopher Stevens: ‘Stars Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton have been promising for weeks that this time, in two newly released episodes, Bridgerton goes all the way. And they weren’t fibbing… though, for such an explicit sex scene, it was also oddly chaste.’

The Times

Rating:

Carol Midgley: ‘I call Bridgerton the “toffs, t**s and titles” show, but here another t-word is at play — tenderness. Coughlan’s aforementioned breasts should get some kind of award for all the heaving they do. Good lord, they’re up and down in those frocks like a pair of airbags.’

Variety

Aramide Timudu: ‘The primary sex scene between Polin involving a full-length mirror and a chaise lounge is one of the sexiest things seen on television since Bridgerton Season 1. Fans may still gripe at the lack of sensual activity on screen, but this mirror section is absolutely intoxicating and beautifully done.’
