Russell Brand

After starring as Flash in the film, Russell's career has been shattered into smithereens after he was was accused of rape and sexual assault

After starring as Flash in the film, Russell's career has been shattered into smithereens after he was was accused of rape and sexual assault.

In 2023, an investigation by the The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches brought to light a number of claims accusing him of abusive and predatory behaviour, including rape and sexual assault.

Since the investigation aired, Russell is now facing trial this autumn over allegations of [sexual violation] and sexual assault made against him by six women.

He was first charged with the alleged offences against four of the women in April last year, and his trial was set to start at Southwark Crown Court on June 16 this year.

Brand denies all the charges which date from 1999 to 2009.

In April he admitted he had 'exploitative' [sexual intercourse] with a 16-year-old girl at the height of his fame but insists his actions were not against the law.

Speaking about his past actions to US journalist Megyn Kelly on her podcast, he said: 'In Europe and the United Kingdom, where I'm from, the age of consent is 16, and I did sleep with a 16-year-old when I was 30.

'When I was 30, I was a very different person. I was a lot younger, and I was an immature 30-year-old.

'Consensual [sexual intercourse] with a lot of people, when there is a strong power differential, as there is when you are a famous man who has the ability to attract women that I had at that time, I think involves exploitation. I think it is exploitative.

'I recognise that my sexual conduct in the past was selfish and I did not apply enough consideration, barely any I suppose, really, to how that [sexual intercourse] was affecting other people.'

Russell, who hosted Big Brother spin-off shows, had his own BBC Radio 2 programme and starred in a string of Hollywood films, is facing three charges of [sexual violation], three allegations of sexual assault and one charge of indecent assault.

After being delayed because jurors are in short supply over the summer holidays, his trial at Southwark Crown Court is set to begin on October 12, when his six accusers will speak about the claims and he will in turn have the chance to give evidence.
