Former Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes has opened up about a terrifying health ordeal that left him hospitalised, with a shattered jaw and nine broken teeth.
The hitmaker, 52, shared a shocking post to social media on Friday night which showed the aftermath of a traumatic fall and the titanium brace now holding his jaw together.
In a raw and emotional caption, Hayes detailed the full extent of the incident and his ongoing recovery, revealing he had kept the ordeal private until now.
‘On March 17, two months after my Mother passed away, I had a terrible accident. I’ve been trying to keep it private but my lengthy recovery period means it’s easier to admit the truth,’ Hayes began.
‘I lost consciousness, I fainted shortly after getting out of bed and collapsed three times, losing consciousness each time.
‘The blunt force trauma was so severe it snapped my left jawbone in half. I woke up in a pool of blood, terrible pain in the left side of my head and with nine teeth shattered.’

The Brisbane-born singer credited emergency responders and medical staff for saving his life and said if the fall had occurred at a different angle, he might not have survived.
‘I’m so lucky I was found and taken to the amazing team at the emergency room of St John’s Providence in Santa Monica, where they acted quickly. I could have died if I landed in a different position,’ he added.
Alarmingly, there were warning signs before the accident and he revealed the fall may have been the result of an undiagnosed underlying condition.
‘I am under incredible care. I have an amazing cardiologist and oral surgeon. We are trying to work out how and why I have been fainting,’ he wrote.
‘So far my heart is normal, my arteries are normal and I don’t have a brain tumour or anything that could cause the accident.’
He said he would be spending the near future focusing on his recovery and told his fans his career was not a priority at the moment.
‘I just wanted my fans to know why I’ll be out of action for quite some time. After my jaw heals it’s a long road to rehabbing my jaw function and then of course replacing my shattered teeth. I love you folks,’ the singer wrote.
Many of Hayes’ celebrity friends took to the comment section with their words of support.

It comes after Hayes opened up about why his band Savage Garden split in 2001, at the height of their fame
‘Darling Darren. Arms around you,’ wrote Bachelor Girl singer Tania Doko.
‘So sorry to hear this but so glad that you were found and are on the road to recovery. Sending you loads of love,’ added comedian Kirsty Webeck.
It comes after Hayes opened up about why his band Savage Garden split in 2001, at the height of their fame.
Savage Garden, comprising Darren and guitarist Daniel Jones, formed in 1993 and produced a slew of number one hits such as To the Moon and Back and Truly Madly Deeply.
However, a rift between the bandmates caused them to part ways after eight years together.
Speaking with Sarah Grynberg on her A Life of Greatness podcast ahead of the release of his memoir Unloveable, Darren said he has suffered a ‘huge personal betrayal’ as a result of the split.
‘Our falling out was entirely due to the fact that he told the world that the band breakup was the first he’d ever heard of it which was not true,’ Darren said.
On The Kyle and Jackie O Show in 2022, Darren pointed to a press conference Daniel had held in 2001 announcing that he was saddened by news Savage Garden was ending, while claiming Darren never consulted him before going public.
After forming in Brisbane in 1993, Savage Garden released two studio albums, Savage Garden in 1997 and Affirmation in 1999.
Combined the albums sold 23 million worldwide and the group won a record number of ten ARIA Music Awards in 1997.
