Richard Madeley playfully teases GMB meteorologist Laura Tobin for her post-Christmas weight gain, prompting comparisons to Alan Partridge from fans.

Richard Madeley joked that Laura Tobin had ‘put on weight’ as she returned to Good Morning Britain after a Christmas break on Tuesday.

The meteorologist, 41, explained how she had been away for ‘almost a month’ before the television presenter, 67, made the awkward gaffe.

Richard, who has long been compared to Steve Coogan’s comic character Alan Partridge, was likened to the Norfolk-based DJ once again.

As the presenters welcomed Laura back to the studio, the weather woman explained how she had been absent for a while.

‘And you’ve put on a lot of weight with the lack of exercise haven’t you?’ Richard joked.

Susanna Reid interjected: ‘You wouldn’t be the only one Laura because I ate for Britain.’

His co-host then claimed Richard’s New Year’s resolution should be to ‘try and not offend Laura.’

Laura explained she’s eaten a few mince pies and added: ‘I’m just going to take a long waddle across the studio later, Richard.’

‘We’re not getting on this morning, are we?’ he hit back.

Fans at home shared their thoughts on Twitter / X with one person commenting: ‘Madeley / Partridge trying his best to upset Laura today.’

‘Richard Madeley makes Alan Partridge look like a real salt of the earth kinda guy,’ another added.

A third posted: ‘Day 2 of 2024 and I see Richard Madeley has learnt nothing from 2023.’

When quizzed by MailOnline about the comparisons in 2021, Richard hit back, admitting: ‘It is unfair’ while also insisting that he isn’t ‘remotely important’ due to his ‘pointless’ career in entertainment TV.

Addressing the Alan Partridge comparisons made about him. Richard insisted: ‘I honestly don’t care at all – it’s actually quite funny. It’s part and parcel of the job I do.

‘It’s so important that you don’t take yourself seriously, because you’re not gonna have a good time if you do.

‘Judy and I started out on This Morning which isn’t really hard news. I don’t go to warzones, I do popular television, which on the whole is pretty pointless, it’s just entertainment. It doesn’t mean you’re remotely important or interesting.

‘If people wanna take what I say – a quip or a comment – and compare me to Alan Partridge – good luck to them. I think some quotes are often taken so ludicracy out of context that it’s a bit unfair.’
