Offspring Star Asher Keddie Discusses Potential Return to Hit Series Amid Reboot Rumors

Asher Keddie says she won’t be returning to her hit series Offspring amid rumours of a reboot of the show.

The Australian actress, 49, who played obstetrician Nina Proudman for seven seasons, said she is happy to leave her character’s storyline where it ended.

In the finale episode of season seven, Nina made the shock decision to resign from  St Francis Hospital.

‘I used to hesitate answering that question. I’d think, “Oh, I never say never.” But [Nina] was in her thirties and what made it so tumultuous and entertaining, watching her navigate her thirties and try and find love, would be so utterly different now, with me almost 50, that I can’t see it,’ she told TV Week.

‘I still love hearing people’s thoughts about it and hearing that people are watching it for the third or fourth time. I think, “Wow, what an amazing thing to have been involved with.” But I think we left it where we should have.’

Despite the actress’s unwillingness to return, industry insiders have claimed there are ‘tentative discussions’ in progress to revive the hit drama for a limited season.

According to New Idea, the source says  one early idea was to do an Offspring version of the 2016 Gilmore Girls Netflix revival.

‘It’s quite a simple yet effective concept…four episodes set over 12 months, divided up by the four seasons – summer, autumn, winter, and spring. It’ll be a year in the life of Nina and the Proudmans’ sort of thing,’ the insider claimed.

When the show ended six years ago, Nina was dating Harry (played by Alexander England) and they were pregnant.

If the show picked up in real time, their daughter would be of primary school age and Nina’s other daughter Zoe would be a teenager.

Asher recently opened up about her real life parenting struggles.

The 49-year-old actress said when she fell pregnant she felt young and healthy, but now she worries about ageing as she raises her young child.

‘At the time, I didn’t think anything of being what apparently is an older mother. I felt the same as I did when I was 25’ she told last week’s issue of Stellar Magazine.

‘I was physically robust and that was fine, but not that long ago I did the stupid sum thing in my head. I thought, oh, I’m counting how old I will be when he’s 18.’

She went on: ‘You realise that you’ve probably lived the majority of your life, but you still have young people there whose lives you want to live with them and watch.

‘It’s a bittersweet kind of thing, but most of it is sweet and most of it’s exciting.’
