Nicola, who last appeared in the 2024 film Lola, chose to lose the weight on her own terms and has ruled out the use of weight-loss injections such as Ozempic.

A source told The Sun: 'Nicola was committed to getting things exactly right for this role and it just proves her determination and dedication.'

They continued: 'There was also no way she was ever going to use the fat jab and so she's done the work all herself.

'There had been speculation about why she had been losing weight, especially given the recent events in her personal life but now everything makes perfect sense.'

Yet fans questioned if her shrinking figure was down to using weight loss jabs or because of her ongoing rift with husband Brooklyn's family.

But the announcement of her role earlier this year has put such speculation to bed.

Other stars have previously spoken out about the gruelling regimes they had to undergo in order to play a ballerina, offering an insight into what Nicola will have endured.

For 2010's Black Swan, directed by Darren Aronofsky, the two lead actresses, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, trained endlessly for the Oscar-nominated movie.

'My prep was a lot of dancing and very little eating - which I know you're not supposed to say, but it's the truth,' Mila told Vogue.

'I drank a lot of broth and danced for 12 hours a day.'

In 2012, the actress revealed she lost 20 pounds for the role.

She told Harper's Bazaar: 'My body has never been the same. My shape is different. When I got down to 95 pounds, I was muscles, like a little brick house, but skin and bones.'

For professional dancers, however, that level of training is simply part of everyday life, and often far more demanding (pictured ballet dancer Isobelle Dashwood)

Jennifer Lawrence also opened up about her strict diet for her role in the 2018 movie Red Sparrow.

She previously told Vanity Fair: 'Red Sparrow was the first time that I was really hungry, and disciplined.

'I remember having a meltdown, freaking out that I had eaten five banana chips.'

This offers just a glimpse into the intense preparation some actors undertake when portraying a ballerina.

Australian Ballet alumna Isobelle Dashwood previously gave an insight into the challenges she must overcome before she steps on stage.

She told the : 'We rehearse six days a week from 10.30-6.30 and during performance seasons we usually have eight shows a week.

'Training is constant in ballet and we use our daily morning ballet class to refine our technique and warm our bodies up for the day of rehearsing ahead.

'Ballet is a constant strive for a strong, solid technique and an artistry that is endlessly evolving.'

In terms of her diet, Isobelle revealed that she eats 'whatever my body tells me it needs'.

'Of course we have to maintain a diet of healthy foods but that is purely to fuel our bodies so we can physically do the things required of us,' she said.
