Michelle Williams breaks silence on Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek’s cancer battle

Michelle Williams is ‘here’ for her Dawson’s Creek co-star James Van Der Beek as he battles cancer.

The 44-year-old actress – who appeared in the 1990s teen drama alongside James, 48, as well as Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson – said she has been supporting him.

The blonde – who revealed this week she has quietly welcomed her third child – said she would be there in ‘every and all ways.’ 

James revealed last year that he has been diagnosed with stage three colorectal cancer, which is also known as bowel cancer.

‘We’re in contact, and he’s in our hearts and our minds, and he knows that. And we’re here for him in every and all ways,’ Williams told Entertainment Tonight.

Michelle is appearing in the Disney+ and FX true story comedy-drama Dying for Sex – in which she plays Molly Kochan, who died in 2019 at the age of 45 after battling metastatic breast cancer.

The show follows Molly as she walks away from her 15-year marriage to explore herself and her sexuality before she dies. 

Michelle said of the role: ‘She’s trying to hold on to something before it slips through her fingers, and I just thought the sheer bravery of that, of trying to hold fast to this thing – to this idea that she has, she doesn’t even know how it’s going to turn out.

‘She doesn’t know if she is going to get what she’s looking for at the end of this sexual journey.

‘But she’s holding on, she’s believing in herself, and she’s believing in the moment. And she’s taking so many risks.’

Michelle hopes the show can fuel joy in people’s lives at a time of heartbreak.

She added: ‘When you get to this age, if it’s not your journey, then you’re the best friend. You know, you’re the person who’s supporting somebody through their journey.

‘And one of the things that really stands out about the show is that you have to be able to – I always say, ‘You’ve got to laugh to keep from crying,’ and I think if the show is really able to find those moments where you can come together in the spirit of the hilarity of the moment and noticing that one thing you can focus on and laugh on to get you through the rest of the day.’

Williams enjoyed a date night with her husband Thomas Kail at the New York premiere of her steamy sex drama, Dying For Sex, on Wednesday. 

The Dawson’s Creek star, 44, made a bold fashion statement in a revealing lilac gown with cut-out sides as she posed with the theatre director, 48, at the SVA Theatre.

The pair — who have been married since 2020 — got flirty as they held hands, rubbed noses together, and gazed into each other’s eyes on the red carpet. 

Her platinum blonde tresses were swept to the side and styled in a sleek bob, with delicate makeup accentuating her features.

The beauty — who shares daughter Matilda, 19, with the late actor Heath Ledger — accessorized with silver bangle bracelets.

Based on the hit Wondery podcast of the same name, the forthcoming sex-positive FX series tells the story of Molly (Williams), a woman diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer who leaves her husband of 15 years (Jay Duplass) and begins to explore her sexuality, according to Deadline.

Michelle and Kail tied the knot two years after meeting on the set of Fosse/Verdon.

The duo share two kids together, son Hart and another baby born in 2022.

Also present at the premiere was her pal Busy Philipps, 45, who looked chic in a black mini dress. 

Michelle also posed with co-stars Rob Delaney, Jay Duplass and Jenny Slate, as well as creators Elizabeth Meriwether, Kim Rosenstock 

Michelle has been busy promoting the new show in recent days. 

‘The show careened from dramatic to absurd to hilarious to unbelievable and then back again,’ Williams described in a New York Magazine cover story Monday. 

Her character Molly is encouraged to make a life-altering change by her best friend Nikki Boyer, played by Jenny Slate.

‘She was healing wounds on her deathbed,’ Nikki told The New York Post in 2020. ‘Her lifelong dream was to write a book and be a published author. She waited until the last few months of her life to do it. She was thinking the clearest she ever had in her life.’
