Sarah Jessica Parker’s husband Matthew Broderick has dished about the ’embarrassing’ Sex And The City role he turned down.
The longtime showbiz couple got married in 1997, one year before Sarah, 59, landed her lead role as Carrie Bradshaw on the beloved HBO sitcom.
Over six seasons, Sex And The City welcomed a wide variety of guest stars ranging from movie heartthrobs Matthew McConaughey and Vince Vaughn to singers Jon Bon Jovi and Alanis Morissette to ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov.
However Matthew, who himself headed the cast of movies like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Lion King, never ended up joining their ranks.
Now he has frankly discussed the reasons he never guest-starred on the show, in an interview on James Corden’s Sirius XM show This Life Of Mine….

Matthew revealed that he was offered the ’embarrassing’ job of playing a ‘premature ejaculator’ on the series and decided against the role.
‘Whenever there was a part that I could do, I couldnโt do it, is really all that happened,’ he said, possibly referring to scheduling conflicts.
‘But also, sometimes it was like: โDo you wanna do two days as the premature ejaculator?โ And Iโd be, you know: โWell, I donโt know if Iโฆ,โ you know? Itโs just kind of embarrassing,’ he said, as his interviewer dissolved into giggles.
The ‘premature ejaculator’ was short story writerย Vaughn Wysel, who was ultimately played by Justin Theroux on the 1999 episode Shortcomings.ย
Vaughn briefly dates Carrie, who has her misgivings about the relationship because of his sexual issue – but finds it difficult to break up with him because of how much she adores his family, particularly his charming mother played by Valerie Harper.ย
Matthew expressed his fondness for Sex And The City but also hinted that he preferred not to horn in on what had become his wife’s domain.
‘I wish that I had done it or been in it. You know, that was her thing, and that would be stunting me or something. I donโt know,’ he said.
‘It just never worked out. I loved that show and I wouldโve been delighted to be in it, but it just never lined up right,’ Matthew continued.

Although he never guest-starred on Sex And The City, Matthew and Sarah have acted together more than once onstage since their romance began in 1992.
In 1996, they co-starred in a revival of the Pulitzer-winning Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows musical How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.ย
He originally led the cast opposite Megan Mullally before her Will & Grace fame, and when Megan left the production, Sarah was brought in as her replacement.ย
In 2022, Matthew and Sarah headed a Broadway revival of the Neil Simon comedy Plaza Suite, which they then took to London’s West End earlier this year.

Reflecting on her long-lasting relationship with Matthew, Sarah once confessed that they had experienced their ups and downs as a couple.
‘”We’ve been together for 20 years and you have good days, you have decent days, and you have bad days. That’s a marriage,’ she told the Telegraph in 2011.
‘That’s a relationship. That’s a friendship, even โ relationships outside the marriage run the same course.ย If you’re in it for the long haul and you want meaningful relationships, you are going to go through lots of different periods.’
