The daughter of Judy Garland, 80, married the late producer, who was found dead in a hotel in 2016 aged 62 after suffering a stroke, in 2002 (Seen together in 2003)

In one particular instance, Liza said she was left 'traumatised' as she recalled being snapped by a paid photographer having lunch with friends after David had made her promise to tell him her whereabouts at all times.

Arriving home from her lunch, Liza said David was furious she had broken one of his 'most important rules' and screamed at her.

'I was legally his wife, in truth, I was his prisoner,' she said in an excerpt seen by The Times. 'Clearly, this insane marriage had to end, and soon.'

Elsewhere Liza revealed David had organised a lavish star-studded birthday party for her - and charged the mammoth bill to her own credit card.

To make matters worse, Liza claimed David quickly returned most of the gifts given to her at the bash and had pocketed the money for himself.

In the memoir, Liza revealed she had been out of work for a year and was in a financially dire situation when she met David.

Liza claimed David flashed his celebrity contacts and inflated his successes, telling her if she married him he would save her from destitution.

While David was alive there was no love lost between him and Liza.

He and Liza were married in 2002 at a star-studded event with Michael Jackson as best man and Elizabeth Taylor as maid of honour.

But the relationship was stormy and the next year David sued Liza for $10million (£6.9 million) for allegedly beating him during drunken rages.

He claimed to friends that he was left with amnesia after she hit him over the head with a stiletto heel during one fight.

He also sensationally complained in the suit that 'she was an alcoholic, overweight, unable to be effectively merchandised.'

Liza responded to his lawsuit by suing David for $2million (£1.4 million) and alleging that he had stolen money from her.

In her column for the New York Post the year David died, journalist Cindy Adams wrote that Liza's 'marriage to David Gest lasted no longer than a colonoscopy. He really was just a gest'.

Liza said she was more his 'prisoner' than his wife as she spoke about his terrifying temper and said the 16 months they were together 'felt like 16 years'

She wrote: 'Obits always say the person was wonderful. This guy was unwonderful.

'While he was breathing she wouldn't even speak to him. Now that he's not breathing she wouldn't even speak about him. My friend Liza told me: 'He's an a******'.

However a spokesman for Liza said at the time that she had not spoken to Cindy recently.

He said: 'Liza Minnelli has not addressed Mr Gest's passing and any suggestion that she has done so following his death is misleading.'

The pair finally divorced in 2007, formally ending their years together, for most of which they were apart.
