More than 40 years after the original series ended its run, "Little House on the Prairie" is returning to screens. Netflix's new adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic novels premieres globally on July 9, and the streamer has already renewed the show for a second season ahead of its debut.
Netflix's 'Little House on the Prairie' Reboot Premieres July 9, Already Renewed for Season 2
Netflix's reimagining of 'Little House on the Prairie,' starring Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, debuts July 9 and has already been renewed for a second season ahead of its premiere.
The reboot stars 10-year-old Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, the role originated decades ago by Melissa Gilbert, alongside Luke Bracey as Charles "Pa" Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline "Ma" Ingalls and Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine, known for her work on "The Boys" and "The Housemaid," described the series as a family drama at its core, built around a family audiences will want to spend time with.
Season one follows the Ingalls family as they leave Wisconsin's Big Woods to homestead in Independence, Kansas, blending frontier survival drama with a more historically grounded take on 19th-century life than previous adaptations. Sonnenshine has said she wanted to foreground the role women played in settling the American West, alongside a more expanded exploration of Osage characters connected to the land the Ingalls family settles on.

The early second-season renewal is notable — streamers typically wait for viewership data before recommitting to a show. Season 2 has already added cast members, including Willa Dunn as Laura's rival Nellie Oleson, signaling confidence that the reboot will find an audience among fans of comfort-driven, heartland programming.
With a teaser trailer already drawing strong engagement online, "Little House on the Prairie" looks positioned to become one of Netflix's bigger family-drama bets of the year.
