Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key have been longtime friends and work colleagues, but it turns out they don’t see each other ‘that often anymore.’
That’s according to Key, who first met the acclaimed filmmaker since his tenure at Chicago’s Second City more than two decades ago.
But through time and all the success of both men, who were each hired to work on the sketch comedy television series MADtv, they’ve seen their relationship change.
During a recent interview with People on Saturday Key recalled how he and Peel teamed up to create Comedy Central’s Key & Peele sketch series in 2012, but the duo have since drifted apart.
Key called the change in the dynamics of their friendship ‘a tragedy’, attributing it to how people reach a point where ‘your lives start to evolve and move in different directions.’

The Parks and Recreation star told the outlet that the pair actually lived together as they developed their professional partnership.
They would go on to win one Primetime Emmy Award from a total of 10 nominations during its run.
Eventually, Key & Peele wrapped on the Comedy Central gig in 2015 after three years, and then after about another decade had passed Peele and his actress-wife, Chelsea Peretti, built a home in Los Angeles.
‘We lived together for a few months and would write and talk about comedy — who we liked and why we liked them and how that worked in the architecture of what we were trying to build comedically,’ Key, 53, revealed.
As a result of all the time spent together getting creative helped they were able to get to a point where they ‘shared a creative language.’
As the Us writer and director was creating his new home life, Key and his producer wife, Elle, were living in New York City, which can create a distance not only in miles but also between people.
As a creative duo, the comedians picked up two Emmy awards for Key & Peele including the award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series in 2016 and another that year for Outstanding Makeup achievements.
in all, the two men as a duo received 18 Emmy nominations over the years working together.
They went on to work side-by-side for season one of FX’s Fargo (2014), with the pair playing a couple of FBI agents investigating Billy Bob Thornton’s murderous Lorne Malvo.

From there, the pair produced and starred together in the action-comedy film Keanu (2016), and then voiced characters in Toy Story 4 (2019) and Wendell & Wild films (2022).
Key is currently starring in the animated film Transformers One, with other characters voiced by Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson.
Peele would go on to earn major individual success by writing, directing, and producing his psychological horror film Get Out (2017), which went on to gross $255.4 million at the worldwide box office against just a $4.5 million budget.

The New York City native would earn another hit as the writer, director, and producer of his film Us that raked in $256.1 million while working with a $20 million budget.
While it wasn’t as big a hit, the Western science fiction horror film Nope (2022) can still be considered another success by brining in $172.3 million, after spending $68 million on the production.
In recent days he has been put promoting the action-thriller film Monkey Man, which he serves a producer for the production that was co-written and directed by Dev Patel, in what’s his directorial debut for the actor.
