Keeley Hawes and Matthew Macfadyen Share Rare Red Carpet Date at Netflix’s Death By Lightning Premiere

Keeley Hawes and her Succession star husband Matthew Macfadyen enjoyed a rare red carpet date night at the premiere of Netflix’s Death By Lightning on Monday.

The couple, who celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary earlier this month, posed side-by-side at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. 

Keeley, 49, looked sunning in a red, highneck dress which featured distressed fabric and a semi-sheer skirt. 

Stepping out to support her husband, she teamed her outfit with a pair of classic black stilettos and styled her hair straight.  

Matthew, 50, who stars in the series as Charles J. Guiteau, opted for a brown double breasted blazer which he teamed with a striped tie.

Death By Lightning tells the true story of James Garfield’s presidency and the American man, Charles, who assassinated him in 1881.

It will follow Charles’ descent into madness as what starts as an allyship with the American President becomes a deep, and deadly, obsession. 

Based on a historical mini-series and a novel which covers the life and death of James A Garfield, the series will look at what led Charles to kill.

Matthew will be joined on screen by Michael Shannon as the President, while Betty Gilpin will play First Lady Crete Garfield. 

Keeley rang in her 21st wedding anniversary with her husband Matthew with a loved-up post on Instagram last month. 

The actress shared a slew of smitten snaps with the Succession star alongside a heartfelt tribute to their long-standing romance.

Among the sweet photos were shots of the couple enjoying an idyllic boat trip, packing on the PDA at a pub and of Matthew posing astride a lawnmower.

Declaring her love, Keeley penned a short and sweet caption that read: ’21 years. No notes. Love you with all my heart ✨’.

Keeley and Matthew are proud parents to daughter Maggie, 20, and son Ralph, 19, while Matthew is also a step-dad to Keeley’s son Myles, 25, from her first marriage.

The couple are lauded for having one of the strongest marriages in Hollywood, with the pair continually making time for each other despite their hectic work schedules.

Yet, Matthew has confessed it didn’t get off to the best of starts, previously describing the moment he fell in love with Keeley as ‘awful’.

Keeley was newly married to cartoonist Spencer, and mother to baby son Myles, when she first met Matthew in 2002 on the set of Spooks.

Matthew later admitted he fell for Keeley while shooting the BBC spy drama, but clarified nothing happened between them until her split with Spencer in May 2002.

He told the Mail on Sunday in 2005: ‘We weren’t having an affair and it was a slow process. But I knew the effect she had on me. She’s gorgeous. Everyone who meets her will tell you the same thing.’

While Keeley has also confessed to developing feelings for Matthew on the Spooks set, telling Vanity Fair in 2022: ‘Matthew just came straight out with it and said “I love you” in the rain one day. I thought, “Oh dear, here we go.”‘

Her divorce from Spencer was finalised in 2004, and she and Matthew married later that same year in an intimate ceremony at the Richmond registry office, before welcoming first child Maggie a month later.

Last year, the couple revealed they are looking forward to their ‘third act’ as a couple when their children fly the nest.

Matthew said he was looking forward to spending quality time with Keeley and heading off on numerous mini-breaks when they have more time to themselves. 

He told CBS in July 2024: ‘It’s like a third act. It’s exciting. We’re like, “OK, mini-breaks!” In the trenches when they’re little, it’s like, ‘This is it for ever’, but of course it’s not.’

‘Then you realise, luckily, ours are really lovely, funny humans who are making you laugh and telling you off.’
