Brisbane Lions crushed the Sydney Swans by a stunning 60 points during the 2024 Grand Final at the MCG on Saturday and fans say it’s all thanks to Katy Perry.
The award-winning pop star, 39, was paid a staggering $5million to put on a 20 minute pre-game performance at the premiership.
And fans were sent screaming when she opened with her iconicโand propheticโ2013 hit song Roar, with the Lions win coming off the back of the omen.ย
Convinced the hitmaker gave them the ‘luck’ they needed to land the crushing blow against Sydney, the Lions and their supporters hailed the songstress as a godsend.
The team commented on Katy’s Instagram post about the AFL Grand Final on Sunday, thanking the songwriter for her choice in opening song.ย ย ย ย
‘Thank you for opening with Roar,’ the account wrote alongside an emoji of prayer hands.ย
Lions supporters flocked to the comment, saying the song was ‘rather apt’ and ‘set the tone’ for Brisbane’s triumphant game.ย ย
‘Roar gave you luck!’ one user wrote, while others said Roar was ‘very fitting’ and ‘the perfect song to open with’ during AFL’s game of games.ย

‘You definitely RoaredโGO LIONS!!! (thanks Katy Perry),’ yet another user added.
Other AFL Grand Final viewers at home took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to point out the irony of Katy singing Roar right before the Swans’ crushing defeat.ย
One user said: ‘Ok, you know I find it funny that Katy Perry opened her performance at the AFL Grand Final with “Roar”, and that the winning team for the Grand Final was the “Brisbane Lions”.’ย
Another wrote: ‘Flicked the TV over to the AFL. I’m surprised at the result. I thought Sydney would have won this GF but when I think about it I suppose bcos [sic] it’s the Brisbane Lions and I am a Leo & Katy Perry performed… her song “I am a champion, you’re going to hear me roar”.’

Someone else predicted the results before the Grand Final kicked off: ‘Calling it now. Brisbane Lions will win the Grand Final because Katy Perry is singing Roar. That’s an omen.’ย
And it seems Sydney Swans fans weren’t too happy with the singer’s display either, with one footy fanatic saying: ‘Think she jinxed the Swans by singing Roar.’ย
‘Katy Perry shouldn’t have been allowed to play Roar. The fix was in from the AFL,’ another wrote.ย
It comes after Katy was reportedlyย asked not to sing Roar at the this year’s AFL Grand Final because of fears it would give the Brisbane Lions an unfair advantage.
During an appearance on The Fox’s Fifi, Fev, and Nick last week Katy seemed to give credence to the rumours after co-host Brendan Fevola mentioned he used to play for the Brisbane Lions.
‘Oh the Lions! I have to cut my song Roar out of the set because it’s not fair. That’s what everybody says,’ she explained.
‘No, you have to play it!’ said Fevola. ‘Because you were booked in way before Brisbane made it.’

Katy agreed she should play it but said there is yet to be a confirmed setlist for the half time show.
The speculation was also discussed on Channel Nine’s Today Show last Wednesday, with co-host Sarah Abo suggesting the song might give the Lions a morale boost to tip the scales in their favour.

It made the fourth Grand Final loss for the Swans since 2012, with a host of their players leaving their best games on the team bus while Lions put on a sublime performance.ย

Meanwhile, Katy set the stage for the Lions win as she wowed the crowd with a 20 minute set that includedย two tracks from her latest album 143, Lifetimes and Gorgeous, her collaboration with Kim Petras.
Despite slipping the new songs in, after she was reportedly only allowed to perform one, it was the hits that got the crowd pumping with Katy kicking off with a rendition of Roar before ripping into her hits Teenage Dreams, Dark Horse and Firework.
Katy also belted out a rendition of I Kissed A Girl with Tina Arena before the pair moved into a rendition of the Aussie pop star’s hit Chains.
But she caused surprise with her setlist by not singing Hot n Cold, despite it famously being the theme tune to MasterChef Australia and jokingly regarded by many as Australia’s true ‘national anthem’.
