She was a Hollywood 'it' girl, landing starring roles in a string of beloved rom-coms and a hit drama series that earned her an Award win.
Nearly two decades later, actress Katherine Heigl is living in retreat - from both Hollywood and the spotlight in favor of a quiet existence on a 20-acre ranch.
But between persistent rumors of a negative attitude on set, a reputation of being 'difficult' to work with and an alleged feud with her former boss Shonda Rhimes, Heigl's unfavorable perception will likely leave some fans wondering if it was the actress who parted ways with Hollywood… or if it was the other way around.
And, after a hosted at President 's Mar-a-Lago resort in , some critics have begun to question if 47-year-old Heigl's political leanings played a role in her self-exile from .
Now, speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, a source has shared how that question of politics could put the actress's career even further at risk.
'Katherine, as we all know, was forced out of Hollywood for being difficult,' the source said.
Katherine Heigl, 47, made a rare public appearance at the Wine, Women & Shoes Benefiting Big Dog Ranch Rescue hosted at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida
The event marked Heigl's first public appearance in two years after permanently relocating to her 20-acre ranch in Oakley, Utah
'The reason Katherine avoids political talk is because she is already blacklisted with so many in Hollywood. If she brought politics into the situation, she would inevitably alienate herself further,' the source continued.
'Having been seen at Mar-a-Lago, people will talk, but the event was a fundraiser close to her heart. She didn't go because of any political leanings.'

Heigl's public appearance on Sunday at the Wine, Women & Shoes Benefiting Big Dog Ranch Rescue event in Palm Beach marked her first in two years.
The Grey's Anatomy star, who is a prominent advocate for animal rights, attended the event held at Trump's resort with her mother, Nancy Heigl.
The appearance came as a surprise to many fans, namely because Heigl had all but ditched the glitz and glamour for a quiet life on her remote Utah ranch some 10 years ago.
It is there, on her sprawling estate nicknamed 'Badlands', that she and husband Josh Kelley have raised their three children: daughters Naleigh, 16, and Adalaide, 13, and son Joshua, nine.
Heigl has admitted she 'didn't know how to raise them in LA,' but that she 'could be more on top' of their lives living in Utah.
The decision, as it turns out, came shortly after she left long-running ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy in 2010 – a departure that was not without its own drama.

Heigl revealed in 2023 that they moved to Utah because she needed 'somewhere to escape' from the busy lifestyle of Hollywood
'She started her career early and was the darling and the next big thing, but how she dealt with her co-stars at Grey's and [2007 movie] Knocked Up was well documented,' our source said.

In 2005, Heigl landed her big break as Dr. Izzie Stevens on Grey's. And, by 2007, she had earned an Emmy for the role.
The following year, however, she dramatically withdrew from the awards race, saying that she hadn't been 'given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination.'
The explanation was perceived by many as a thinly veiled insult to the show's creator, executive producer and Hollywood honcho, Shonda Rhimes.
Heigl later acknowledged to Entertainment Weekly that she 'could have handled the situation more gracefully' and said she privately apologized to Rhimes over the perceived snub.
But it is unclear how long that truce lasted after she complained in 2009 to chat show host David Letterman about her Grey's Anatomy filming schedule, calling the length of her 17-hour work day 'cruel and mean'.
She later admitted that she felt 'embarrassed' by how 'whiny [she] sounded'.
But it wasn't the first time Heigl had stirred controversy.

She previously told Vanity Fair that her 2007 film Knocked Up, directed by Judd Apatow, was 'a little sexist' and painted women as 'shrews, humorless and uptight.'

Her comments upset her co-star Seth Rogen, who told Howard Stern that he felt his 'trust' had been 'betrayed' by Heigl.
By 2009, reports had surfaced that Heigl allegedly failed to show up to work to film season six of Grey's Anatomy. Heigl has refuted this claim, saying that she was on 'family leave' after adopting her daughter Naleigh and was waiting to be called to set.
Heigl ultimately reached an agreement with Rimes to end her contract 18 months early, and made her final appearance on Grey's Anatomy during the show's sixth season in January 2010.
Much to the enjoyment of fans, she reunited with her co-stars Ellen Pompeo, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson at the Emmy Awards in January 2024.
Heigl also shared an emotional social media tribute for the late Grey's Anatomy star Eric Dane following his passing from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in February, acknowledging that she even 'debated this post for days'.
After leaving Grey's Anatomy, she landed a number of television appearances and starring film roles – including the final two seasons of Suits after the Duchess of Sussex's departure, and the Netflix series Firefly Lane, which lasted from 2021 to 2023.
But the series of media controversies undoubtedly had an impact on Heigl's bustling Hollywood career. The actress herself has even publicly fought back against her negative reputation, in an apparent effort to rewrite her 'difficult' narrative.
'I may have said a couple of things you didn't like, but then that escalated to "she's ungrateful," then that escalated to "she's difficult," and that escalated to "she's unprofessional,"' she told the Washington Post in 2021.
'What is your definition of difficult? Somebody with an opinion that you don't like? Now, I'm 42, and that s*** pisses me off.'
Still, our source suggested that it will be an 'uphill battle' for Heigl if she ever wants to get back into Hollywood's good graces again.

'She hasn't been able to lose the "difficult" label,' they told the Daily Mail.
'Katherine can't seem to shake the attitude she brought to Hollywood when she was on top of the world. It's an uphill battle right now. If she gets another chance, she will gladly play accordingly to have a comeback, but it isn't going to happen soon since so many people don't like her.'
Perhaps that is why Heigl has found a peaceful respite in her sprawling Utah estate – complete with a barn, a brood of farm animals and a full-sized dressage arena.
While Heigl revealed the sprawling ranch was intended to be 'somewhere to escape' from the imposing eyes of Hollywood, she and her husband – who tied the knot in 2007 – began to spend 'more and more time there' after starting a family of their own.
Heigl, who was raised Mormon but no longer practices the religion, has even waxed poetic about the small community and slower-paced life that she has found in Utah, which holds the highest Mormon population in the US.

Unsurprisingly, the actress's particular disdain for Los Angeles and her recent appearance at Mar-a-Lago have left some fans wondering exactly where Heigl lies on the political spectrum.
In past years, she star has avoided speaking about politics entirely.
When asked by paparazzi about the 2008 presidential election, Heigl said she does not 'do politics' because she gets 'annoyed' by the discourse.

Six years later, she admitted she was 'terrible at politics' and made the self-effacing joke that she doesn't 'understand the politics of things.'
However, Heigl previously expressed her support for the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2015, saying the US Supreme Court decision made her 'very emotional' and 'very grateful'.
The actress is also an outspoken animal rights activist, having launched the premium dog food brand Badlands Ranch in 2022 and turned part of her Utah farm into an animal sanctuary.
It would seem Heigl has had no problem speaking out against both animal cruelty and her negative treatment in Hollywood.
But when it comes to advocating for more hot-button political issues, our source suggested that the actress appears far more reticent.
'Though she is outspoken when she has to be, she will continue avoiding politics and will not bash anyone whether they deserve it or not,' the source said.
'She mentioned in the past that she doesn't understand politics. This was based on the fact she has friends who are a mix of Republicans and Democrats and she doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings with her political beliefs.'
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Heigl for comment.
