's ousting from Nine follows what TV insiders describe as a 'slap in the face' to his most loyal wingwoman, his heavily pregnant co-host Sarah Abo.

Stefanovic is understood to have parted ways with the network on Wednesday night, following the fallout from his interview with British far-right activist , which was uploaded but then deleted from his independent podcast, The Karl Stefanovic Show.

The Morning Herald, which is owned by Nine Entertainment, confirmed Stefanovic's departure from the station and the Today show, indicating the decision was made in part to 'defuse a major advertiser boycott'.

Stefanovic, who is on two weeks' leave in London, was told that the network 'wanted to part ways' - despite him still having six months to run on his contract.

Platforming Robinson and allowing him to spew his thoughts on Islam, immigration and Australian politics was clearly a bridge too far for Nine - and, surely, for Abo, who fled war-torn  for Australia with her parents and two younger sisters when she was four years old.

It has not gone unnoticed that Robinson - who has multiple criminal convictions - was jailed in October 2024 for breaching a court order prohibiting him from repeating false claims about a Syrian refugee who had successfully sued him for defamation.

Abo, 40, is weeks from welcoming a longed-for child with husband Cyrus Moran following two miscarriages, and is preparing to go on maternity leave within weeks.

Now, it seems she will spend that precious time attempting to shelter from the nuclear fallout from her co-host's departure from the network.

Abo is expected to go on maternity leave within weeks, leaving the Today desk empty

Those in the know describe her situation, at best, as 'very awkward', and at worst, a 'betrayal'.

Abo was seemingly handed a poison chalice when she was chosen to sit alongside Stefanovic, 51, on the Today desk in 2022.

He has infamously fallen out with several female co-hosts - including Lisa Wilkinson and Georgie Gardner - and Abo was expected to smooth over his off-script quips and provide a stable influence on her erratic co-host.

All while taking home an eye-watering $2million less than Nine's controversial poster boy, who was, according to The Australian, on a $2.8million salary to Abo's $800,000 (though there are reports he recently took a pay cut, but negotiated being able to start his independent podcast as part of those terms).

But Abo rose to the challenge and even became friends with Stefanovic outside of work, with pictures emerging on social media of her spending time with Stefanovic's wife Jasmine and daughter Harper.

Abo was also a guest at Jasmine's 40th birthday in 2024.

She has never had a bad word to say about Stefanovic, at least not publicly, with no suggestion she ever leaked or briefed against him during their four years on Today - a display of loyalty that is vanishingly rare in the TV industry.

'Sarah has done what few women in breakfast television have managed to do, which is to create a real rapport and genuine chemistry with Karl,' said a well-placed source.

Stefanovic buddied up with controversial right-wing activist Tommy Robinson on his new podcast

Amid the controversy, Abo is preparing for parenthood with her husband Cyrus Moran

Now, that is a moot point, given Stefanovic is unlikely to ever sit at the Today desk again.

Nine executives have reportedly been 'huddled in crisis meetings' all week trying to figure out a path forward for their flagship show, with Stefanovic out and Abo going on maternity leave in late July.

The looming empty anchor's desk is a problem of their own making, according to industry sources, who say Stefanovic's departure has been on the wall for a long time. Notwithstanding the current controversy over the Robinson interview, his contract was set to expire in six months.

'There has been no real succession plan in place even though everyone could see Karl was heading in this direction,' said one insider.

Instead, it seems Today could face a 'revolving door' of hosts, possibly for the rest of the year, at a time when ratings have dipped dramatically.

The bad publicity has proved a boon for Today's rivals, Channel Seven's Sunrise, which ignored any temptation to hire a human headline generator to match Stefanovic when their long-time host David Koch retired.

Instead, they chose determinedly uncontroversial former Olympian Matt Shirvington to sit alongside Natalie Barr at Sunrise's Eveleigh studios, which has proven a stable combination in the all-important ratings battle.

'Karl has always been good for a quick headline or in the more recent years, online clickbait, but even though he's been at Today for 20 years, he has never once beaten Sunrise,' noted a TV veteran.

On Wednesday, Sunrise averaged 426,000 viewers nationally. Today was left in the dust with 302,000 Australians tuning in.

Stefanovic was not on air, but in chilling signs for Nine, viewership dipped to 282,000 last week.

Channel Nine has been contacted for comment.
