'On Big Brother, ordinary people became famous overnight, watched by millions and even name-dropped by A-listers like Johnny Depp. It’s easy to forget just how huge it was. A true cultural moment. RIP Jade Gone but never forgotten'.

Such was the scandal at the time that although Shilpa did not lodge an official complaint about racist behaviour with Big Brother, her allegations compelled police to investigate the possible classification of her treatment as 'racial hatred'.

In a bid to rehabilitate her image, after being evicted to no audience the previous year, she agreed to go on the Indian version of the show, however during her appearance she was told live on air that she had been diagnosed with cancer.

After her diagnosis, Jade's cancer spread to her bowel, liver and groin and she died on Mother's Day in March 2009.
