The 54-year-old actress - who after their split - opened up about the topic in her upcoming memoir I Choose Me: Chasing Joy, Finding Purpose, And Embracing Reinvention.
Garth and Facinelli were married from 2001 until they announced their separation in 2012. Their divorce was finalized the following year and the former couple share three children: Luca, 28, Lola, 23, and Fiona, 19.
The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum explained how she was able to positively move forward after the end of her marriage during an interview with People.
'I don't know, there was a weird switch where one day I just said, "I don't want to carry this anymore. I have done this for long enough."
'"It's impacting my relationships with other people. It's impacting how I feel about myself. I've got to let it go. I've got to forgive him,"' Garth recalled.

The star admitted that after she did so, it had been 'the most freeing thing in the world.'
The mom-of-three continued, 'I'm sure it's hard to hear as a woman going through [divorce], or really in the belly of the beast to hear me say it's like a switch that you have to flip, but it is.'
In her memoir - which hits shelves later this month on April 14 - she recalled needing to get her stomach pumped after heavily drinking and taking pills after the split; Garth and Facinelli seen in 1998

Back in 2024 during an episode of her I Choose Me podcast, the actress reflected on her co-parenting relationship with the Twilight alum.
She stated, 'That's what Peter and I ultimately wanted more than anything was to have our friendship back and be able to co-parent in a healthier way because we had been doing it all wrong for a while.
'The girls are so happy and there's just a big weight off my shoulders. That's a conflict I don't need to carry anymore.'

And while talking to the New York Post in 2023, Facinelli explained, 'I always feel like as long as the parents, the co-parents, are getting along and we're happy, the kids are happy.
'You know what I mean? It's when nobody wants to choose sides. No, they love mom and dad equally.'
The actor previously told Garth on her I Choose Me podcast that they had been 'codependent on each other' during their marriage.
Facinelli also expressed, 'I didn't have a lot of choices - it was just a part that I felt like I was good at playing, but I hadn't formed me.
'You had already formed you, so there was a codependency there where it was like, I don't know my choices, I don't know what I like and don't like.'
