‘Hollywood Star Rebel Wilson Heads Celebrity Condolences as Comedian Cal Wilson Passes Away Unexpectedly at 53: ‘Such a Heartbreaking Loss”

Celebrity tributes are pouring in after it was announced that Australian comedian Cal Wilson has died at age 53.

Rebel Wilson, Grant Denyer and Shaynna Blaze were among the stars who expressed their heartbreak and shared their condolences on social media.

‘This is so tragic and my heart goes out to Cal’s family. I was very very lucky to work with Cal on multiple projects especially over the last few years where she wrote brilliant material for me. She was amazingly talented and amazingly kind,’ Rebel said.

TV personality Grant Denyer also shared his heartache, adding:’Oh my goodness. I’m shaking. I can’t believe what I’m reading. How unbelievably sad.’

‘The most tender, kind, generous and talented performer I’ve ever had the pleasure to work alongside. This is devastating. Her poor family. Love you Cal… thanks for everything. You are very special.’

The Block star Shaynna Blaze also paid her respects.

‘I can’t even comprehend this right now. The most divine, radiant person who I have watched, admired and worked alongside. This is heartbreaking. So much love to her husband, son and family. This is a very very sad day,’ she said.

Australian of the Year, Dylan Alcott, wrote: ‘Absolutely devastating. Cal you are such a beautiful person who always had time for everyone. Was always a pleasure anytime I got to work next to you.’ 

Meanwhile, Spicks and Specks star Myf Warhurst expressed her heartbreak writing: ‘Oh Cal, what utterly devastating news. What a joy it was to be in her magnificent orbit over the years. My love to all who love her.’

‘What an enormous loss. Beautiful, bright Cal with all her colour and creativity will be so missed. Love and deep condolences to her loved ones,’ Sylvia Jeffreys also said.

Cal passed away on Wednesday after a short illness.

The New Zealand-born TV personality was surrounded by family at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She leaves behind her husband Chris and son Digby.

She had also worked as a radio and television presenter, actress and author. She starred on TV shows Spicks and Specks, Would I Lie To You and Good News Week.

‘Cal’s generosity, talent and friendships have been constant in the Australian comedy scene for the last twenty years,’ her management company Token Artists said in a statement.

‘Cal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers and a huge hole has been torn in the heart of our community.’

She had moved across the ditch from Christchurch to Melbourne in 2003 where she appeared on the sketch show Skithouse.

Cal had performed at the Melbourne Comedy Festival 14 times and most recently co-hosted Foxtel’s The Great Australian Bake Off. She also featured in her own Netflix stand-up special.
