But before creating his familial acting dynasty with his wife Gwynne Gilford, Pine – who was born Granville Whitelaw Pine – was untouched by Hollywood, the son of a patent attorney born and raised in New York City.
He almost didn’t pursue a career in acting even though he fell in love with the stage through his school plays in high school. Electing for a pre-med path at Ohio Wesleyan University with the goal of becoming a doctor.
But once that diploma was in his hands, he took his chances in a summer show on Nantucket where the acclaimed playwright Robert Anderson discovered him and took him under his wing, according to his official biography.
That connection would land Pine at the doors of Universal Studios where he learned horseback riding to guest star in TV shows like The Virginian and the movie Gunpoint.

His big break came in 1977 with CHiPs, an NBC crime drama television series where Pine played Sergeant Joe Getraer, a no-nonsense by-the-book cop in charge of the California Highway Patrol

The show’s signature freeway pileups became a major source of entertainment for its audience, while Pine won over viewers with his portrayal of a father-figure character, as his co-stars Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox humorously tried to avoid being reprimanded by him.

The couple have been married for an astonishing 56 years.
His marriage to Gilford meant his mother-in-law was Anne Gwynne, the bombshell beauty who was one of the original scream queens of the 1940s. She died in 2003 aged 84.
Robert and Gwynne had a daughter Katie in 1972 and Chris followed in 1980.
When CHiPs ended in 1983, Pine continued his TV career guest-starring in the pilot episode of Good Morning, Miss Bliss – which would become Saved By The Bell – and other shows such as Gunsmoke, Lost in Space, Knight Rider, Barnaby Jones, Lou Grant and The Wild West.
Pine also appeared in multiple Star Trek spin-offs, foreshadowing his son Chris’s massive success as the main character in the successful Star Trek reboot film series that hit the big screen between 2009 and 2016.
