In a message shared on the fundraiser page beneath a photo of Dane with his daughters, organizers wrote: 'It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of Eric Dane after a hard-fought battle with ALS, leaving behind his devoted wife, Rebecca, and his two teenage daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.'
They added that Dane 'remained deeply committed to helping others facing the same devastating disease,' noting that his illness progressed 'far more quickly than anyone could have imagined.'
One of Dane's close friends, Mike McGuiness, publicly defended the fundraiser, explaining in an Instagram tribute that COVID-19 and ALS had taken a serious toll on the actor's ability to work.
'Covid and ALS did a number on his work life and he sadly couldn't leave his family with the resources he had hoped,' McGuiness wrote, adding that Dane's death 'broke me' and describing ALS as 'as hopeless an affliction one could get.'

He noted that Dane faced the disease with both 'grace' and 'dignity.'
Gayheart later acknowledged the outpouring of support by posting a brief message to her Instagram Stories, writing simply: 'Thank you to everyone.'
Before his death, Dane recorded what he described as his 'last words' to his daughters for the Netflix documentary Famous Last Words: Eric Dane, which was released posthumously.
In the nearly hour-long film, he addressed Billie and Georgia directly, saying: 'I tried. I stumbled sometimes, but I tried. Overall, we had a blast, didn't we?'
He went on to share four lessons learned during his ALS battle, including to 'live now, right now in the present,' to 'fall in love,' to choose friends wisely and to 'fight with every ounce of your being and with dignity.'

'This disease is slowly taking my body, but it will never take my spirit,' he said.
He concluded: 'Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words.'
Dane was widely known for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as McSteamy, on Grey's Anatomy, a role he began in 2006.
His passing occurred on the 20th anniversary of his first appearance on the ABC series, which aired on February 19, 2006.
He later starred as Cal Jacobs on HBO's Euphoria and had filmed scenes for the show's upcoming third season prior to his death.
