The film follows the lone scientist on a mission to uncover why the sun is dimming.

In the movie, which is set to hit cinemas on March 20, the sun's brightness is predicted to fall one per cent in a year and five per cent in 20 years.

The trailer score 400 million views globally in just its first week online, according to WaveMetrix, via Deadline

The trailer's success may have been partly due to the interest in Ryan's appearance, as  in portions of the video due to his wild, unkempt beard and long, scraggly hair.

According to WaveMetrix, the Project Hail Mary trailer's 400 million views represent the most ever for an original film that is not a sequel or a remake.

The first footage of the film debuted at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Sandra's character ominously says in the trailer, 'The sun is not the only star dying. If we do nothing, everything on this planet will go extinct.'

At CinemaCon, Gosling took a playful swipe at his directors, saying of Lord and Miller, 'They are only happy if they make you do the very rare and coveted laugh-cry.'

'It’s an insanely ambitious story that’s massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that’s kind of our bag.

'This is why we go to the movies. And I’m not just saying it because I’m in it. I’m also saying it because I’m a producer on the film.'
